I'm soon to be moving from Dorchester to Somerville. I am looking to collect information on moving trucks and movers. Anyone want to point me towards a good, reliable, and affordable moving company?
I had a good experience with Precision Moving Co. in Somerville last summer. The Better Business Bureau says it hasn't received any complaints about the company in the past three years. Whichever company you pick, make sure it is licensed and hasn't racked up too many complaints.
Tagged your post as moving, if you click on that, you will find some previous threads on this very topic, which comes up about every six months or so. Presumably the old recs are still fairly functionaly.
My rec is same as always, Spry Moving, out of Woburn.
1) If you are moving into a place that you will own, join Angie's List (angieslist.com), which can answer this and many other homeowner-related questions.
2) Last time we moved, and on the List's recommendation, we used Smooth Moooves (yes, there is a nontraditional number of Os, thouh I don't remember how many, and a goofy cow icon). They were a little sketchy about checking their voice mail but other than that swift, pleasant, accomodating (we had an unexpectedly complicated move) and plenty cheaper than Gentle Giant.
I always had good luck with Careful Carriers with four moves in all. However, the very last time I used them which was 2005, their rates had gone up. Better to research so you get the best rates.
I second the recommendation for Precision Movers. They were nice guys, and really just kept moving stuff, no wasting time - mind you down 3 flights and then up 4..no elevators included!! I moved "all the way" from RI and they were very efficient.
Also, they're based out of Somerville, so you save a few bucks on one end since they all charge by the hour, starting when they leave their warehouse and end when they get back (at least from my experience 2 months ago).
Also, I found that some movers have cheaper hourly rates, but add on all kinds of fees for stuff..so beware when you're getting estimates that they don't make up for cheaper rates somewhere else! Precision was pretty straight forward and didn't tack on much of anything although their hourly was a bit higher.
I just moved from Somerville to Cambridge and I used Michael's Moving and Storage. They were excellent and cheaper than Gentle Giant. They were very fast, they moved 2 people with furniture in 2 hours.
Avoid using Atlas movers. Their "good faith" estimates are basically fraudulent. When I moved to Ball Sq, they estimated they could do it for just over a thousand dollars, but in the end they charged me over three grand! When I complained, they had two comments:
The employee who gave you that estimate was brand new, and he was mistaken; and
Good thing it's just an estimate, eh?
Never mind that the price was close to TRIPLE the estimate, and fully two thousand dollars over it.
Totally recommend Big Foot Movers: http://www.bigfootmoving.com/ About a year ago they helped my wife and I move two apartments (one in Lowell and another in Cambridge) into one under the estimated time they gave us, which saved a big chunk of money. The crew showed up on time in the morning, didn't extend their lunch break, and were absolutely professional, quick, and friendly.
I have used them twice, once within somerville and once from somerville to cambridge.
I think I initially found big foot because I called Marathon movers http://www.marathonmoving.com/ and they were booked for 9/1. They took the time to advise me about a few good companies so that also indicates that they are a nice an reputable company.
I'd go with Gentle Giant not only for their reputation as good movers, but they're good to their empoyees, and also good to their community (both local and not-so-local). That counts for something in my book.
Since others have already commended Gentle Giant for their skill and reputation, I'll commend them for style.
These guys were fast. (The two squads I worked with on my previous two moves were hired from local crew teams.) They picked up four or five boxes of books and ran. My partner and I sat on the floor, well out of the way, while they sped back and forth. Amazing.
They're good folks, too, and they know when to slow down. When I asked them to be careful with a particular heirloom desk, they very deliberately gave it their full attention.
Your mileage may vary, but in two moves they didn't break or bruise a single one of my possessions (or themselves).
We have used Gentle Giant twice and they are awesome. I couldn't believe how fast they got all our stuff out of what was effectively a 6th-floor walkup (the elevator was out of commission). They are not cheap though.
I got Stairhoppers from the BBB site. They moved me from Somerville to Medford at the beginning of April. The guys were on time, really nice and their estimate was dead on. They were also the cheapest of the 4 or 5 places I called.
We used Stairhoppers to go from Davis/Teele to Central, and had no complaints. Friendly, professional, quick, and accurate--and very accommodating of the parking situation on the Cambridge end. (Short version: couldn't pay for a moving van permit because nobody in the parking office would answer a phone, nor would they answer a question via email or voice mail, then stopped returning calls all together, and due to my work schedule, I couldn't get down there in person.)
But Stairhoppers were great, and their office person was also very friendly. And their logo is a dancing frog, which won them points from me.
whoever you choose, look up reviews online first. My new roommate used Empire Moving Services and had a disastrous experience. I put "Empire Moving Services" into google and the top two links were from ripoffreport.com and movingscam.com so a little research on my roommate's part might have saved him some anguish (and broken property).

One tip -- if you can move on a weekday, or in the middle of the month, it's often cheaper.
