Museum of Bad Art will open second branch at the Somerville Theatre:
Somerville - The folks who run the infamous Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) simply couldn't leave well enough alone. Not content to have curious people from around the world visit their basement space just outside the men's room at the Dedham Community Theatre, they're opening a second spot — MOBA 2 — in the Somerville Theatre, again in the basement, but now nearby both male and female bathrooms.

For those not aware of this wonderful institution, it's a collection of artworks that likely didn't turn out exactly as planned. MOBA's Permanent Acting Interim Executive Director Louise Sacco says that, for a piece to hang there, "It has to really be art. It has to be original, sincere, it has communicate something to people, and it has to be interesting."

As a fan of MOBA, this makes me absurdly happy. :)

Cool! Richard Fraiman told me something about this a month or two ago when I ran into him near the theatre's stage door, but I didn't want to post until it was official.

The last line of the article you linked to says:

MOBA 2 opens at the Somerville Theatre on May 14.

Absolutely, we should do some sort of meetup at the grand opening (if there is one).

But since this is past the ropes, will you have to buy a movie ticket to take the tour?

I imagine so, but maybe they'll open it free to the public for special occasions, like the opening night, or ArtBeat.

I've heard little snippets about this and I'm glad it's finally being publicly aired! :)

From what I last heard, you do need to buy a movie ticket to get in to see the museum. I guess there was no workable way to let people come and go into the only museum part of things. But maybe they will find some way around this some day if there is enough demand for it.

At the least, if you do pay to see a movie there you'll get an awesome added perk by being able to see MOBA as well!

Well, the Independent Film Festival of Boston plans on having free preview screenings this summer -- most of them right at the Somerville. The lines will be long, but once you are past the ticket taker, you are free to go downstairs to the museum. And you can buy beer and ice cream to add to your viewing pleasure.

I just spent a weekend volunteering in the theater for the IFFB, so it would have been nice to have it while we were hanging around waiting for movies to finish.

Huh. I had seen the art in the basement of the Dedham Community Theatre and didn't know what it was. Now I do. Yay.

!!

I've been wanting to see this for ages but Dedham just seemed too annoying to get to. Awesome.
