Monday, letters go up to $0.42.  I don't recall the Post Office doing this before, but the undenomiated stamps they are selling now for $0.41 will be $0.42 after the change.  They are called 'forever' stamps and will *always* be valid for full 1st class postage.  Not that this is D^2 specific, but I thought it merited a news-bit.

They started selling Forever stamps a year ago, around the time of the last rate increase (from 39 cents to 41).

Geez, I still have a bunch of 39's I'm running out of space on letters to put 1c stamps!

Get the 2 cent stamps with the beautiful squash-blossom necklace on them.

Actually, the P.O. is doing us all a favor; you can only buy "Forever" stamps (which have been around for a while now) out of their machines.

Not true. You can buy them from the post office clerks as well.

he probably meant that you can't buy 39, 41, or whatever cent stamps out of the machines anymore.

OK. I was actually wondering which kind of stamps the bank ATMs sell -- Forever, or 41 (or 42) cent. I should ask the bank clerks, but they may not know since I don't think the local branch employees empty and refill the ATM.

i always just buy mine from a teller at the post office so i'm not 100% sure, but i think it would be funny if dan thought you couldn't buy stamps from a teller, and even stranger if that ever were the case.

Bad phrasing: what I meant to say was the machines will not sell you stamps with a denomination on the front; just forever stamps.

If we are all truly fortunate, the USPS will continue the trend of over-complicating stamps as much as possible, and also start selling stamps in 1c, 3c, 6c, 11c, and 23.33c (repeating, of course) denominations, and not visually mark the differences on the stamp.

One reason for Forever stamps is so the Post Office could stop printing all of those other non-denominated stamps before each price increase. Remember the A stamp, the B stamp, and so on? I think they quit before they got to Z.
