The Somerville Theatre's outdoor ice cream window has reopened for the season. They sell Richardson's Ice Cream from Middleton, Mass.

Kiddie size is $2.75, small is $3.25, large is $3.75, "Best Frappe Ever" is $4.25, and a hot fudge sundae is $5. Jimmies are free. Candy topping is 50 cents.

Each time you buy an ice cream, they'll punch a little card. Eight punches gets you a free movie ticket.

The portions are still generous, but they're not the "kiddie size = as big as your head / small = ridiculous mountain / etc." they were last year. Ah well.

Agreed on the smaller portions. We went by on Sunday night and got a small, which last year would have been big enough to share. This time it was about the right size for one person.

Is Richardson's ice cream excellent? How does it compare to JP Licks just across the way. Of course, more ice cream options are always a good thing.

Richardson's is good, but probably comes in second to JP Licks, flavor-wise. That said, when the theater window is selling ice cream, I won't go anywhere else in the square. The servings are enormous and the staff is friendly. I always feel like I got a little ripped off when I go to JP Licks, which definitely detracts from the experience. But when I go to the theater, I feel like the owner is just doing everybody a favor by selling enormous bowls of ice cream for cost. Kind of like the theater's beer policy: having a beer at the movies is awesome, and given concession pricing, I'd expect to pay around $8-9 dollars for the pleasure. But the Somerville Theater sells pints for, what, $4? $4.50? Madness!

Added bonus: Richardson's Diary has been run by the same family since about a hundred years before the US was a country. I used to work with a Richardson of the current generation, and he's good peeps. Definitely the kind of business I like to support.
