Hi all--

I'm looking for someone to move a piano into my second-floor apartment (whee, lots of stairs!). I haven't found the piano yet 'cause I'm still looking on craigslist (which reminds me that if you have a smallish-upright you want to get rid of without receiving actual money, please leave a comment/message).

Anyway, does anybody out here happen either to be an experienced piano-mover who has the equipment or to have a recommendation of someone very affordable who can handle lots of stairs?

Sadly, I can't afford to hire folks who are strictly piano movers. I'm sure Death Wish and others are great, but way out of my price range. Thanks for those recs, but I can't use them.

Thanks!

No clue about their prices or service quality, but their logo and name is awesome:

I like their logo so much, it makes me want to go buy a piano just so I can hire them.

Actually, I think I'd like to buy one anyway.

Yeah, DeathWish rocks. When I worked at a local theater, we would hire them to move our baby grand and they made it look like nothing.

I have had a grand piano moved twice, once by Deathwish and once by a normal moving company. Deathwish made it look easy (I had no idea pianos were so light), while the other company made it look nearly impossible (hmm, maybe someone has filled the piano with lead since we moved it in...).

Deathwish are amazing. Worth the money.

If you get a spinet, any random mover can move it just fine, though.

I've actually heard mixed reviews of Death Wish -- quality of service can depend on the crew you get. That said, I used D2 Piano Moving (based in Newton) for a two-stage move of a 6' grand that included using a crane to get it to the second floor at the final destination. Not cheap, but then the crane costs...

If your stairs are at all narrow or have turns, a full-size upright (and the muscle to move it) may well not fit.

Gentle Giant is another one to consider. I've had really good experiences with them, and when they moved my stuff recently, the job right after was a 3rd floor walk-up to 3rd floor walk-up piano move. Not sure what your price range is, but when I was contemplating getting a piano a few weeks ago (which fell through due to the geometry of my stairwell) their quote was around $450 for the whole move.

Don't you have some professional movers (http://www.upack.com/about/full-service-movers.asp) in your local area? It's a piano we are talking about, if anything happens you'd better have it ensured...

When I was moving my stuff, I sought out NJ moving companies (http://www.starcitymoving.com/). Check them out if they cover your area.
