Oh my god. I'm watching it on 7 now. I can't remember the last time there was this bad of crash. I really hope no one is seriously hurt. They just said the majority of injuries appear more minor. But someone is still stuck inside. The impact looks so terrible.
There is some confusion about "head-on" versus "rear-end". The report that said "head-on" was an interpretation from a reporter in a helicopter, so I treat it with a lot of skepticism.
Or, in terms of US subway disasters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malbone_Street_Wreck Almost as bad as Eschede in terms of deaths (93 vs. 101), but occurred on a US urban subway system, and remains one of the worst rail crashes in US history.
Channel 7 has cut over to the Stanley Cup finals at this point, but NECN is still continuing to report continuously. The operator is still trapped, they've been cutting away to try to free her for over two hours now.
Yes, because we all know people living in and around the Davis Square area wouldn't be caught dead on the D line... not that anyone died, except for the operator. But who cares about her, right?
Did you know it's actually possible to live in one place and regularly travel to another place for business, entertainment, or education? It's called commuting. I myself--amazingly, a Somerville resident!--do it on a regular basis, and the D line is actually one potential route to my school; I take it from time to time. Even though I don't live by it! Wondrous. Like ron up there, it completely defies common sense.
did you know that there are ways to separate your interests into different categories, so that you can cut through the MASSIVE amount of information on the internet, and only see what is of interest to you at a given time? One way is with LJ communities. People can choose which communities to join, and further, choose which ones to read at any given time, thus making their news gathering a much more streamlined and managable experience. After all, if EVERY story about EVERYTHING and EVERYONE was all in one place, it would be impossible to digest, and thus useless! Thanks god I can read about boston stuff in the boston community, Davis stuff in the davis community, and so on, and not have people force their unrelated shit on me constantly.
I was in Government Center station around 6:45, waiting for a Green Line train to Park Street. The first train that arrived was a D, but I heard no announcement about the accident -- not in either station and not in the train.
So far there has been one reported death. One of the train conductors, she was 24yrs old. story here- http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2008/05/mbta_train_cras.html
Yes, it's a big story. Yes, people in Davis Square care about stuff like this. But it's the wrong forum. It's not related to Davis Square -- and was already well covered by all the local TV stations and newspaper web sites -- not to mention more general regional blogs like Universal Hub.
