I trashpicked a really nice old trunk, but both of the leather handles are rotted/broken away. Anyone know a craftsperson in the area who could pop off the hardware, cut new leather straps, and reattach the lot?

Rockler (the woodworking store on Mass Ave) carries trunk hardware, which I think includes straps, if you're looking to do some of the work yourself. They might also be able to instruct you or point you toward someone who can do the work for you.

i did a quick search and found some basic info on doing the repair yourself (http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cr_storage/article/0,2025,DIY_13779_2270131,00.html). of course this depends on what the handle hardware is like, but if it's similar to what's in the link, then it seems pretty easy.

this is a place that sells replacement parts and specializes in antique trunk restoration (http://www.shenandoahrestoration.com/trunk_index.html)

you may also wish to check with a top quality luggage repair place, or google steamer trunk repair boston and see if there are any restorers around.

hope that helps!

You might want to try this place. Some people on Yelp seem to think he is a leather genius.

Art is a total leather genius with shoes and handbags.

I have never done any kind of luggage project with him, but if it's beyond his scope, he'll tell you.

Just beware that those things are pretty notorious for having some pretty deadly mold growing between the panels inside depending on how they were kept.. (Basement ones in particular) but a nice hot sunny day is great for killing that.. just lay it open in the backyard for a good long while.
