It was a slim victory, but a victory none the less for having both a bar and a non-bar event in July. Any suggestions? Since we don't have much time to set this up, I'd prefer going back to a place we have been. How about PJ Ryans or Orleans? If there is a desire to go some place new, we can do that as well but we need to pick a place very soon. Make suggestions and I'll go with one of them.

[Poll #1205632]

EDIT: Since PJ Ryans is currently leading and because I've already emailed the owner of PJ Ryans and they would like to have us back, I'm going to call them the winner. We actually have a date already set and it is going to be Thursday July 17th at 7pm. We also have a meetup next week at the Burren and I'll be posting a poll about that on Wednesday.

Sorry Orleans; I had to vote for PJ's. I'm in Orleans all the time and need an excuse to take a break!

I voted for PJs in part because I thought last time, the PJ's meet-up worked much better than the Orleans meet-up.

But as a side note, after watching most of it at home, I popped over to PJ's for the 4th quarter of the game last night, and I do declare is the BEST place in the Davis area to watch a basketball game. The mood was perfect, tons of screens mean you have multiple choices from any spot, and a great sound system let you actually hear the commentary without creating an oppressively noisy environment.

And of course, they have possibly the best whiskey and draught beer selections in the neighborhood, which works any night. Go PJ's!

[And as a side note to my side note, why is basketball broadcast on TV in such a way that makes it so hard to follow without sound, (unlike, say, baseball). I mean, they could pop up a visual to tell us what the foul call was, who committed it, etc, but don't.]

I do with foul calls were a little more obvious, but if they put up a little talking basketball that explains the game every few minutes (as has been done in a few world series tournaments), I'm quitting.

Ew, nonono! Also, no.

I mean like in baseball, where you get the balls & strikes, and even a quick flip with the pitch speed. And in football, they often show the penalty yardage and tell you the down and yards to go, etc. Just seems like it'd be easy to do.

(I wonder if soccer has a similar issue, and is the reason PJ's has the sound system in place?)

Yeah, especially since the refs in basketball are like 12x shorter than the players and kinda hard to see :). Also, I just need to learn more about pro basketball.

Most places with TVs have sounds attached to them, no? Although, after last year's MNF commentator debacle, I kinda wish some didn't.

IME, most places don't have sound systems that seem designed to let folks here the TV sound -- they may have the sound on or a speaker or two, but it can be hard to hear or get muddy at higher volumes and end up annoying both to people who want to pay attention and those who don't.

(I almost never watch football (pretty much just the SuperBowl), so I am not familiar with the MNF debacle of which you speak.)

Good point. They could do the same for traveling violations, 24-second violations, out-of-bounds, but they don't.

Does it matter if (a) there is trivia at the bar on the night we pick, or (b) there is a Red Sox game on the TV?

I think trivia is Tuesdays at PJ Ryan's, Wednesday at Orleans.

If you want to make absolutely sure there are no sports on the TVs, then pick Monday 7/14 or Wednesday 7/16. These are the days before and after the All-Star game, and therefore have no major league baseball games at all.

Other Red Sox off-days in July: Thurs 7/10, Thurs 7/17, Thurs 7/24, Thurs 7/31

Of course they would, we are not only awesome, we run up a huge-ass bar tab on a weeknight!

Even though I voted for Orleans, that would be fine with me.

Yeah, it's getting pretty consistently kicked the curb. I liked Orleans but honestly PJs was a bit more fun (this possibly is due partially to attendance).
