Probably too late to be asking but ...

... are any towns nearby doing fireworks tonight? I'd rather not schlep into Boston and fight the huge crowds. Anywhere near/around Somerville?

Newton or Waltham are probably your best bet.

Another alternative: watch the Boston fireworks from Prospect Hill Park here in Somerville.

Oh yes, and Prospect Hill can get pretty crowded too.

I plan to bicycle to MIT soon and watch the Boston fireworks from Memorial Drive. Biking back to Somerville is far faster and saner than dealing with the Red Line or walking to Lechmere to get a bus home.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I did the same thing. The lines at the busses and the T and the lines of cars were pretty intense. I was really glad I was on a bike.

Do you know whose fireworks I saw over downtown before Boston's big bonanza this evening? I'm not good with geography in that direction and you are wise in the ways of the Greater Boston Metro Area.

From looking at those two lists, my guess is Hingham. But I don't really know.

it's totally too late now, but we went to Tisch Library on Tufts Campus. Granted, you couldnt' actually get on the roof because they were doing some construction there, but there was a nice crowd of us (50-100 people?) sitting on the hill and we had a great view of the fireworks. Someone even had a radio tuned to the pops, so we could hear the music.

I watched the fireworks (http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/CHEMWEEK/fireworks/fireworks.htm) from McGrath Highway and it kinda sucked. There was an immense cloud of smoke that formed but never really dissipated, so I spent most of the show with an obstructed view. This is the same thing that happened to me two years ago when I watched from Charlestown Navy Yard.

The view from Tufts was a good one? Perhaps I'll try that next year.

I watched the fireworks right in front of the barge on Memorial Drive, and the smoke was bad there too. It obscured a lot of the 'detail'.
