I have a parking question, and I tried 311 but it didn't work on my phone? I went down to the parking place this morning and the lady just kinda bitched me out.

Anyways, I don't have a car but two of my roommates do and 2 of my future roommates (starting 9/1) have cars too. I notice that other people have those signs that block off the space in front of their homes for a few days for "moving" so I wanted to do the same but the person at the P&T office said I have to pay $25 for a moving van pass despite the fact that we're not using a moving van, just a suburban and the like. Is this not kosher? She told me they don't block the street off 'just for moving' but I really don't want to have to park down the street and lug stuff back and forth and up the the two flights of stairs. Parking on our street is pretty sparse as it is.

Also, will they ticket an unpermitted car in our driveway?

Edit: You're all full of shit. (I say this half jokingly). Thnx for flooding my inbox while I was out for coffee.

A word of advice: it's pretty rare that anybody around here gives a shit where you're from, either for or against. Texas' reputation has less to do with stereotypes and more to do with the gun laws/religious crazies/absolutely psychotic state pride. So there's really no point in getting offended, because you'll probably feed the stereotype.

And, for the record, just to cut off the "what do you know?" butthurt, Mom from Texas, born in DC, spent my summers in Tennessee until the age of 18.

Considering most of this city's population moved here from somewhere else, I actually find it pretty rare that ANYBODY cops an attitude about where anybody else is from, unless an attitude is copped first.

That is really not my experience, except perhaps in the sense that it's refusing to blindly agree with the local prejudiced assessment of one's town of origin that really brings out the nasty. But Texas' reputation has less to do with stereotypes and more to do with the gun laws/religious crazies/absolutely psychotic state pride is what prompted me to call bullshit.

Distance tends to suppress the mundane and bring the extreme into focus. Which is rarely fun, but often illustrates things you don't notice (or possibly prefer to forget).

Keep in mind your average person who does NOT live in Texas tends to hear a lot more about religious people trying to ban Harry Potter, or a nurse running into some homeless guy and leaving him impaled on her windshield, or textbooks saying you can get AIDS from sweat (yes, they had them) or the most recent story, a man walking onto his neighbor's property, blowing away two unarmed thieves with a shotgun, and walking away clean. Do they hear about average Americans, living ordinary lives? Nope. And that drives their assumptions.

Of course, this process cuts both ways. Some of your fellow Texans have some pretty hilarious misapprehensions about what, exactly, people from New England are like.

You just described how Texas's reputation around here is based on stereotypes. I am perfectly aware of how this sort of image gets built up. It's still insulting and ignorant, and it's valid for people to object to those stereotypes are invoked.

Fair enough, but honestly I don't think I was crossing into stereotype territory: it's just Texas unfortunately has a contingent of people who either create or cater to the stereotype.

Also, frankly, sometimes you fit a stereotype without realizing it, something I've learned the hard way once or twice.

I think that really depends on what parts of Boston/Somerville you're in, then..or maybe just who you associate with/work with. While a lot of folks I meet are from out of state like myself, a lot of the locals I've encountered definitely lend themselves to the "massholes" designation. Texas may have outspoken state pride, but I don't think that the new england/boston pride is any less fervent. Just a bit less spoken.

That I'll agree with, except for the pride part, I should say. The Austin Lounge Lizards wrote "Another Stupid Texas Song" for EXCELLENT reason.

I disagree.

I was in TX for my grandmother's funeral last year - in Longview, a few hours east of Dallas and an hour west of Shreveport LA. I hadn't visited TX for probably twenty years or more.

My husband and I are sitting in the (Catholic) church, listening to the homily, when we noticed, at the same time, the stained glass window to our right.

In descending order, there was a crucifix, a dove, and Texas.

This also doesn't take into account the Texas shaped birdbath outside the hotel, my texas-shaped waffle from the texas-shaped waffle iron, or the texas-shaped hamburger in the Whattaburger.

I'm happy to agree to disagree. I don't think how many things shaped like Texas makes the argument - it's the pride the people have.

Besides, I think the boston red sox madness has less to do with baseball and more to do with where the team is located. There are around 12 sox flags to the 1 american flag displayed on my street.

I don't care, as long as they STFU about the Green Line.
