A family member in the Spring Hill area of Somerville has been 'adopted' by a stray cat they're calling Rocky (although they've been told it's a she-cat),   She's a tiger cat, beautiful, very clean, and seems to have been well cared for.   She's very friendly and affectionate, and appears to be pretty young.  They have been unable to locate the owner and can't keep her due to severe cat allergies.  If anyone out there is looking for a lost cat, or is interested in adopting a very friendly cat, please respond!  We hope to be able to find her a good home!

Does this cat wear a flea collar?

She looks and sounds an awful lot like a cat that I've seen around Spring Hill for the last couple of years, and I eventually concluded that she must have a home somewhere.

Are you sure she's abandoned? Odd though it may seem, some people in that area do let their cats outside.

Such a beautiful cat. Hopefully this will get straightened out.

I'm not exactly sure why, but my initial reading of this post included the fact that she loves poetry.

I need to learn how to read.

Are you sure she doesn't belong to one of the neighbors of your relative? She could be a cat that just got out of the house. We used to have a cat that came up to our porch every time she escaped from her family who lived up the street. I understand the people watching her have severe allergies but you also don't want to adopt her out if she belongs to someone. Have you called around and put up flyer's, etc?

My cat has a micro-chip between her shoulder blades (put in by the ASPCA when I adopted her) to help ID her if she ever got out- my address information is in the file with her ID. It's possible that this cat has one too- might help find the owner.

Many years ago when a cat was wandering around my home in CT, I noticed after a few days a string (jury-rigged collar) appeared around its neck holding a note "is this your cat? call xxx-xxxx". When a different cat appeared 3 years ago, I remembered that & used the technique. (Got no calls to claim the cat, just one confirming it was a stray she couldn't take in because of her cats, so she caught him for me & I have him still.)

Definitely check for a chip first, but your relative might consider the note-on-a-collar method.

I don't really have anything to add except that this cat is pretty much a dead ringer for my cat Sputnik and that it is particularly common for random-bred cats to have grayish fur and exhibit the "mackerel" tabby pattern (Sputnik was found on the lawn outside a dorm at MIT by a friend of mine, obviously somewhat neglected but very friendly).

If you can't find the owner or find a home, you might try contacting Pets in Need -- http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MA09.html () -- it's a no-kill shelter and they have a facility in Somerville (Gilman Square). Don't know if they'd have room or not -- I hear the shelters are crowded lately,

Did you ever find out what was up with this cat? If you confirmed she's without a home, I might be interested.
