Hey everyone,
Does anyone know how to soundproof a wall/ reduce the noise level? My roommate and I just moved and now share a very thin wall between our bedrooms. To top it off there is also an extra door that leads from one bedroom to the other. Is there any way to put something up to reduce the noise without damaging the wall or caulking the door shut? Is egg crate foam the easiest/ most effective solution?

I'm not sure of the effectiveness, but I just moved in and took down a whole bunch of soundproofing egg crate stuff that's in great condition. If you do decide to go that route, I can give it to you - I was just going to toss it.

We'll probably hear about this being OT

But since I typed this much, I'll say that the door, specifically the crack around the door is going to let the most sound through. Sealing up all around the frame will do the most to eliminate direct sound coming through, and even then it won't be much. Next after that, putting mass against the wall, like big furniture, dresser drawers and so on will help block the transmission of some sound. Foam will do a little bit too, but also serves as an ornament of how little privacy you have. Some thick fabric to drape over the wall will probably be as effective and possible more attractive. Rugs are good sound deadeners too. Every little bit will add up.

Rugs on the floor are great soundproofers. If you don't have any, I would invest in one for each room. Also, perhaps fabric or quilt wall hangings, which would help to absorb some of the noise but would also be attractive to look at. Curtains would also be practical and help to absorb sound. If you currently have thin curtains, think about something a little heavier.

Depends on the noise. Sex noise? Instruments? Stereo?

The aptly named "sound deadening board" (aka fuzzboard) works wonders. You can get it cut to size at pretty much any lumber yard, it doesn't cause permanent damage, and is easily covered with something aesthetically pleasing.
