I walked by Cibiline Friday morning and saw a big board over the door. apparently they had a break in sometime Thursday night (i walked by around 10PM Thursday night and i didn't notice the door like that). My mom was in town and she went in to ask what happened and apparently she said there were other break-ins around Davis that night too??? One by gun-point? I didn't see anything posted about this yet, but did anyone else hear about this or know what happened?

Don't worry...

Regular anti-yuppy activity by proud Somerville old-timers.

That seems to me uncalled-for. I'm more likely to believe that the theieves came to Davis from other towns.

But "blame our neighbors who have been here longer than us" is not a constructive response to crime, and doesn't help build community.

It wasn't newcomers spray painting "kill a yuppy".

It's horrible what happened to her.
But when are officials going to open their eyes. When are yuppies going to open their eyes. Although I don't agree with these tactics, I also see how some of my fellow locals are hurting and nobody is taking note. We've watched our families and friends be pushed out to far away places just so yuppies who couldn't care less move in. Considering most of those friends and relatives aren't wealthy they can barely come back to visit nor us visit them. Let alone find work where they are considering transportation is a huge problem. If the tables were turned, I could never move somewhere like this, seeing what is happening to the locals. Most yuppies don't care, they keep coming. Most of them are heartless thieves who get handed everything in life and look down on those who aren't just like them.
We now understand the Hawaiian natives.

Blame the people selling, not the people buying.

When the yuppies start slaughtering you, maybe you will.
Until then, your hyperbole disgusts anyone who has seen the effects of real genocide.

I mean this question in all seriousness (as it not trying to flame here) but what's the deal with the yuppies? Who are we talking about here? I don't know if I have my blinders on or perhaps just an outdated view of who/what yuppies are but I used to work in Manhattan (commuting in from Brooklyn before it was the "hep" place to live) and I saw yuppies there, plenty of them (around where I worked, not where I lived, obviously). And I'm can't say as I've seen much of these types of folks around here but I'm either not seeing what's right in front of me or that yuppies look/act differently around here or that what is considered a yuppie around Boston is different from NYC. We're not talking about college undergrads here, right?

I think that around here "yuppy" simply means "A youngish person who doesn't look like a slob and appears to have more money or to be more successful than I am".

This commentary is generated by the first response, which was snarky, about the old-time 'Villens possibly being responsible for the break-in.

Ron, rightfully, commented that such -baiting doesn't help community dialogue, and I fanned the flames by pointing out that the acts of hate graffiti weren't done by newcomers, which led to more of the same complaining about gentrification we've been hearing for years.

Good summary. I'll comment again with a "told you so" after they catch the guy(s) who did it. :)

Who exactly is looking down on you or your friends? Seriously. in my experience, the only folks around here who tend to look down on others are older, semi-drunk guys in Irish pubs, for some reason (not the yuppy stereotype). When I walk around most parts of Somerville, people generally seem pretty open and tolerant.

Exactly what does this have to do with a break-in at a clothing store on Holland Street?

As opposed to Townies who are just harmless little angels, put upon by the Man ?

What should I do about the rising rents? Avoid Davis Square and find a place out in the burbs so that this dysfunctional population can continue to wallow in its self-inflicted misery ?

If you want to talk heartlessness, take a look closer to home. The old timers have no more of the milk of human kindness than the newcomers, and every smash&grab in the neighborhood proves it.

I'm confused. Was a slogan like that painted at Cibiline? I know it's happened in the past (outside our house no less), but has it started again?

Most break-ins to small stores are done by people who live fairly close to the stores. Thieves rarely travel any significant distance to rob small targets.

It's not old timers. It's either vandals on the way home from clubs hanging around being a nuisence late at night or those anti-yuppie clowns trying to rank up the crime rates to lower property values so they can afford to stay in the hood. They want Somerville to go back to the way it was in Davis and still is in some parts. It should be noted that recent criminals caught for the bike path assault were from Medford and Arlington.

That's awful, especially as she's preparing to move the store to Boston next month.

If nothing was stolen it's not a break-in, it's just vandalism.

I would imagine that if you break into a property, it's a break-in. Just not a robbery.

I see, so there's evidence that someone actually entered the store, rather than just breaking the window? It sucks when not even a thief wants the clothes in your store.

From: [identity profile] badseed1980.livejournal.com
I don't know if this was a break-in, or if anyone entered the store, but I am pretty sure that nothing actually needs to be stolen for it to be considered a break-in.

I don't know about the Davis Square area, but there seems to have been a break-in at a laundromat on Winter Hill, right where Broadway and Main Street fork off. I can't remember whether it was Thursday or Friday morning when I drove by and saw the scene. There were cop cars, yellow tape, and a big sheet of glass from the storefront window lying shattered on the ground. Related? Who knows?

rash of breakins

It seems like there may be a person or people breaking into businesses at night - my wife was in True Grounds in Ball Sq. over the weekend and was told that a number of local businesses have been the victims of smash-and-grabs, including two or three in Ball Sq. (I think the wings place was one) and, further afield, Petsi's Pies (whoever my wife spoke to said that in that one, they couldn't figure out how to open the cash drawer so they just took the whole till). I think this stinks, it's hard enough to run a small business without some idiot or idiots smashing the place up. Whether it's a yuppie or a townie.

I find this "yuppie" vs. "townie" stuff here in the 'Ville to be very interesting from a number of different perspectives. But what the heck does it have to do with these break-ins? I hope those criminals are caught as quickly as possible.

I agree. I do not understand the relevance of that discussion to this crime.
