I have a project that calls for distilled water. Does anyone know where I can get that around here? (from googling it seems like distilled water is different from the various bottled waters one can buy everywhere).

distilled water isn't always required

There's a huge variation in the mineral content of tap water throughout the USA, and New England water has some of the lowest mineral content in the country. Sometimes, direction call for distilled water because a process or product won't work with super hard water from, say, certain parts of Texas.

According to the last report I got from the MWRA, our water has about 7 mg/l of calcium and magnesium. On the other hand, more than 80% of America has "hard" water which is defined as more than 80 mg/l. As far as I know, the "hardest" water in the USA (hard = most mineral content) comes from some streams in Texas with more than 1000 mg/l of calcium and magnesium. So MWRA water is a lot closer to distilled water than to the average tapwater in America.
