As I am a freeloader and don't have a paid account, and am not willing to get a plus account, there shall be no poll. But, I'm curious:

What do you feel, outside of a liquor store, is the place with the best beer selection in the Davis area (let's make it a one mile concentric circle from the center of Davis Sq.)?

Redbones definitely wins for selection. 19 good beers on tap every time I'm there, and PBR for the hipsters.

Other good options nearby:
Cambridge Common - Closer to Harvard, great selection of usually hoppier beers.
Christophers in Porter - decent list of pub-type ales

Bullshit, Downtown Wine and Spirits at Davis, they have the rarest beers from Europe, I love that place...

They have a good number of European beers, but they certainly don't have the rarest. There are many excellent beers that aren't carried by Downtown.

That said, it's definitely my go-to place for beer buying. Not dissing it too hard, just saying.

I guess Orleans and Redbones are probably the answer, but neither is exactly a microbrewery. I wonder what the closest Sunset-esque place is.

The closest brew-pub is John Harvard's, but that's beyond the one-mile radius.

Sunset-esque place? You mean a place that doesn't clean their serving lines well and has to put some beers on sale when the keg is getting old?

That said, the nearest self-described beer bar is probably Bukowski's in Inman (2 miles from Davis, per the original post). The tap list is pretty good and I suspect they have the best bottle list on this side of the river. However, whatever place Daniel Lanigan opens at the current B-Side Lounge will probably do it one better.

Redbone's wins this one pretty easily. I can't think of anywhere near Davis that comes close to their selection.

Redbone's. Not only in Davis, but definite top 3 in Boston for my English boyfriend, who is a beer snob, even regardless of the birthright to it. :) And Underbone's definitely #1 for the atmosphere.

(the 2 others on his list are also quite obvious - Bukowski's (both locations) and Sunset)

Actually outside of a Liquor store I'd say Cambridge Common, they have a pretty decent selection on tap.

Red Bones, definately; of note is that although they don't have the most extensive selection compared to places like the publicke house, sunset and bukowski's; they switch up their selections a lot so you can frequently try something new.

S'true that Redbones has a great selection, but for a drink, I'd rather go to PJ Ryan's, who has some pretty impressive options, too, as well as an awesome array of whiskey.

Decent bourbon selection? Tell me their selection is better than the Jim Beam premium whiskey consortium of Knob Creek-Booker's-Baker's-Basil Hayden's.

I may have to look into this, even if there's the possibility of Tranespotting...

There are a lot of options for good beer in the Davis area. Redbones, Cambridge Common, Christopher's, Olde Magoun Saloon, and PJ Ryan's are all good choices.

I've been going to Cambridge Common a lot recently, and I'm a big fan. They have a lot of interesting beers and very reasonable prices.

Also, Redbones is currently having their annual Northwest Fest. They bring in a bunch of beers from the Pacific Northwest that you normally wouldn't be able to get on the East Coast. It's a great opportunity for us beer geeks to try some new beers.

Namaskar

It's not the best beer selection in the area, but I've been impressed with the bottle selection at Namaskar. They usually have something malty (like Salvator or another doppelbock), something hoppy (Victory Hop Devil and Brookly IPA) and something phenolic/estery/Belgian like Chimay or Duvel.

Washing down a Vindaloo dish with a Hop Devil is a true taste experience. The only downside is that everything tastes bland for a day or so afterward.

My vote is Redbones

plus: i don't know if christophers or cambridge common sell cask conditioned beer, but red bones does and i've never been disappointed with their selection

minus: i hate those dial-a-beer / beer-of-fortune-wheel whatever the hell they call that gimmicky apparatus for people who can't choose a beer.

It seems like whenever I go to Redbones, they NEVER have a cask available. :(

It's a little more than a mile, but The Independent in Union Sq has an excellent selection (where's the last place you saw Founders Breakfast Stout on tap?). Fewer taps, but overall as good as Redbones.

They have Founders Breakfast Stout on tap? I sure hope they still have it when I come back for Christmas this year!
