Solar Workshop this Saturday

Somerville Climate Action is sponsoring a solar energy workshop hosted by yours truly, Eric Becker, on Saturday October 25th from 10am to Noon. We'll discuss how to harness the sun's energy and federal and state incentives to make Solar Somerville a reality. The economics of solar got a whole lot better earlier this month when the federal tax credit for solar was extended by 8 years and the $2,000 cap lifted. The time has never been better to consider solar for your home.
We will cover:

Conservation and efficiency first! - tax credits and rebates for insulation
Solar photovoltaic systems
Solar hot water systems
Rebates and tax incentives
Financing your solar system

I am not a solar systems engineer, but we have had both solar PV and solar hot water systems installed on our Somerville home and have learned a great deal in the process.

Do you really get enough sun at this latitude

To be worth the expense, for residential users with limited roof space?

Ummm..... YES. The limiting factor you mentioned that would be most critical is the amount of good south-facing roof area. There is plenty of sunshine here to generate plenty of electricity and hot water. Sure, the amount you can generate is lower than in Arizona, but as far as payback goes, the fact that we have among the very highest electricity prices in the country makes it quite economical. Keep your eyes on this space for future workshops if you want to know more. We had a great group yesterday (full house!) and plan to do more of these in the coming months.
