i'm looking for a caterer of a less-formal sort. i'm looking for the sort of guy who shows up with an eight foot long grill and an assistant, big piles of marinated meat and vegetables and such, and grills it all up for a big horde of hungry people. i've seen this done out in the country, but have no idea where to start looking around here!

if you've had any experience with this, or know of a friend of a friend who does, i'd love to get some leads to follow up on!

thanks very much! :-)

Red Bones does catering. I have no idea if they do the onsite kind of thing you are looking for but if "marinated meat" is part of what you are looking for it might not be a bad place to start a search.

This sounds like a job for Redbones!

Yes, they cater. (http://www.redbones.com/menus.html) I bet you'll even get their cool-looking 1950's pickup truck showing up.

And I'm headed there in about two hours for dinner. Meat. You are what you eat, and I'm made of meat.

Yum.

Redbones does that sort of thing. Depending on what you're looking for, you might also give What's Cooking on College Ave. a call (they're at Powderhouse Square).

Allow me to chime in with Redbones as well. And their BBQ kicks major butt!

Redbones is good, but the Blue Ribbon in Arlington has them beat all to hell. I don't know if they'll grill on premises, but they'll bring over big tubs of tastiness.

Both rb and br have plenty of veg. options, by the way. If that's an issue.

In that case watch out, some of the veg. at Redbones are cooked with meat. (Beans, collard greens for instance).

You could try asking on chowhound's Boston board (http://chowhound.com/newengland/boards/boston/boston.html) - they would probably have some good leads.
