Hello folks,

I just got an Acer Aspire 4530 with windows the 32 bit Vista Home Premium installed. I am interested in upgrading to 64 bit Vista Home Premium.
Windows states that I am eligible to upgrade but need to find an install and install it with my purchase code. Can anyone local help me find an install disk? I live about 15 minutes from Davis Square and any help would be great.

Thank You,

Fish

Best Buy. Amazon. Any computer retailer, really. Asking for a free copy from someone in the community would be publicly asking for someone to break the law for you.

Also, what's with the picture?

Not breaking the law.

If she has a purchase code/license key for the 64 bit Windows, no laws are being broken. Lending an installation disk isn't breaking the law - giving out your license key might be depending on your license and how many copies you're allowed. I haven't read Windows licensing recently to see if it's a single install or like many things are these days, and allow up to 3 installations or more. You can't install Vista or anything better than XP without a purchase code or license key of some sort. The installation disk is meaningless without one.

That's a valid point. If the OP has a key, asking for a disk is fine.

nice job jumping to conclusions without actually doing any research...:)

Yes, it is perfectly legal. Microsoft says that the license key is good for one Vista, either 32 or 64, but not both at once. The 64 bit install media isn't keyed to a license, you apply your own license after applying the update.

So as long as the media is borrowed, and no license key is exchanged, there's no issue.

funny thing, I think microcenter probably doesn't give the media away free. I think Tuna's looking for just the disk, not to pay $200 for a new install.

Yes, well, people giving it away = theft, if Tuna here hasn't paid for it, ya know?

Kristie, READ THE OTHER COMMENTS, eh?

Tuna has a laptop that came with an OEM 32 bit Vista. It's perfectly legal for him to change that to 64 bit. He doesn't have to pay for anything. I'm a licensing professional in a previous lifetime, and I'll stake my rep on this one. I don't steal music, I don't steal software. But this request is just simply legit.

If you actually looked at the other comments where I and others have detailed what the situation is, including links out, you'd be educating yourself rather than just accusing people of stuff when you don't know the facts.

Note the time of my first comment, note the time of the other comments. I replied to you from my e-mail and didn't check the rest of the entry 'til now. If s/he had put that in his/her original post then I wouldn't have suggested s/he needed to pay for it. Get a grip!

Might be possible

Yes, that's true - if the license allows for an upgrade without needing a new key, then asking for a disk is not illegal. If the upgrade requires a key, then you need to purchase it (obviously).

Mod Note

I think part of the reason some of these comments were less than helpful were a reaction to your technique. In general, padding out posts to make them take up twice the vertical space is frowned upon. Pictures should be small or behind a cut. And relevant.
