Does anyone have recommendations for computer repair shops?

Specifically, I need to have the screen replaced on a really old ThinkPad laptop (T420).

Thanks!

I have 2 rather elderly Macs (a sapphire iMac and a gray eMac) that are taking up valuable space in my apartment, and that I would love to donate to anyone who can find a good use for them; problem is, I need to wipe the hard drives, and have neither the knowledge of how nor the time in which to do such a thing. Would anyone be willing to help me out with (1) the HD wiping, and/or (2) finding a new home for them? #1 needs to happen before #2, of course, and while I can't afford much in the way of financial compensation (having been laid off at the end of April and temping sporadically at the moment), I can try to scrape up something, and there's always the usual bribe of seriously lethal baked goods...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sorry to be so vague, but this is a third-hand request from a potential client for computer "help" in Cambridge. It seems the person in question is looking for some paid tutoring/consulting/setup services. In addition to computer expertise, she's looking for someone comfortable with one-on-one teaching and with good interpersonal skills.

Any recommendations? Is anyone here doing that kind of work themselves?

Thanks so much.

I've been struggling for months to connect my computer to my receiver via audio cable without picking up an intermittent AM station or three. Different cables (laboriously routed) and various arrangements of ferrite cores have not addressed the problem. I need a local sound engineer to do a house call. How could I locate such a person, and not for an exorbitant amount of money?

My Epson CX4200 ink-jet printer/scanner/copier is intermittently failing with all red lights flashing and an "E" in the LED numeric display.

Can anyone here recommend a place or person who can fix it? Micro Center doesn't fix printers. The nearest authorized Epson service center is in Weymouth, which would not be an enjoyable trip on public transit. The printer is 9 years old, so it's long out of warranty and "authorized" isn't important to me.

I just broke the screen on my shiny new Nexus 5, and I'm embarrassingly heartbroken about it. I've never had to repair a smartphone before--any recommendations? I'm sorry if there's been prior discussion of the question--I browsed through the tags looking for anything that might be relevant, but nothing jumped out at me.

I don't want to overrun the community with lots of separate posts today, so I'll roll a bunch of unrelated topics into this one:

  • Pinkberry opened Thursday night at 263 Elm Street. As [livejournal.com profile] lbmango said elsewhere, "Davis square has officially reached froyo saturation."

  • Utzsav: A Fest of Punjabi & Sikh Culture in Union Square plaza, today from 4 to 8 pm.

  • Sunday from noon to 4 pm, on Holland Street between Davis and Teele squares: SomerStreets Strike Up the Bands festival includes two live music stages, an outdoor rock climbing wall, and an outdoor beer fest sponsored by Johnny D's, PJ Ryan's, and Rudy's.

  • Greek Music and Food Festival at Dormition Church, 29 Central Street, just up the hill from Somerville Ave, today and tomorrow.

  • St. Cosmas and Damian Italian festival on Warren Street in East Cambridge, right at the Somerville line, today and tomorrow. On Sunday their parade goes through Union Square and other parts of Somerville.

  • This month, the walls of True Grounds in Ball Square feature art by Julia Tenney.

  • Angeltronics computer repair shop in Ball Square is closed, with windows papered over. This post from April says they moved to Malden, but their website still says they are in Ball Square. A building permit on the front door says it is being converted to "4 treatment rooms". I have no idea what that means.

Its the older, non-portable model. it charges my iPod Classic - and says its playing - but no sound.
I looked it up on line and its either a cable connection problem or it needs a new circuit board - which
according to a youTube video is a 3 minute job with a 3rd party board. I'm just not mechanically handy
that way & don't have the right tools to get the plastic cover off. Bose says they'll give me a new one
for $150 - but I think its an easy fix if I can find someone who knows how.

Anyone have a recommendation for someone (preferably local) to do hard drive recovery? I've got an external hard drive - Western Digital "My Book World" - that's b0rked, and I'd love to see if it's possible to get (any of) the data off of it.

Thanks!

I have to get a new power cable/adapter thing for my iBook G4 (it's the cable thing with the white square adapter and a round plug). I emailed the Mac repair person recommended a couple of years ago in this community, but never got a response. Any other suggestions for where to get used computer parts (especially Mac) in the Somerville area?

(Yes, I know about the MIT Flea, but I don't think I'll be able to make it there this month. Also, they charge admission, which might add too much extra cost to this one small thing I need than I can really afford right now.)

Thanks in advance!

(Oh, and yes, I still technically live in Maine, but I have to be in Somerville next week for a bit.)

FYI Angeltronics, the computer repair store that was in Davis and is currently in Ball Square, is moving to Malden.   I was in there today and was pleased with the service.   The owner doesn't know if the landlord has a replacement.

My cat jumped up on my netbook the other day and managed to claw out two of the keys :( I have the keys, they are not broken, but I can't seem to get them to go back on. Anyone know a local computer repair person who can fix this? I would really rather not have to order a whole new keyboard.

Thanks!

Best place to get a hairline crack in an iPad 1's screen repaired? It's still responding to touch and everything, so nothing else is broken. It's completely out of warranty, so it doesn't matter whether it's a licensed Apple repair shop or anything, as long as they do a good job.

Anyone use one of those mom and pop computer repair places that are around?   In theory they seem like they'd be great, but their storefronts and the fact that I've never heard of anyone having used one always leave me wondering...

The only other alternative I know of for something not under warranty is Best Buy Geek Squad.

I am trying to find out if there's enough interest from people that would want to learn how to build, upgrade, and overclock their own computer.

Anyone know a place in the area where people can recycle and scavenge computers and parts?

I used to get parts from the computer recycling bin at the Cambridge DPW's Recycling Center, but recently they started enforcing their rule against taking anything from the electronics bins.

I have a Macintosh G4 powerbook from 2006. It works great. Unfortunately a few minutes ago the power adaptor/charger unit started to smoke. As I have limited battery I really need to have a charger at all times. A new one looks to be about $80 in the store. Does anyone have a spare I could buy off them for less than $80? What I am looking for is the old style charger with the circular plug, not the little rectangular magnetic one like on the current macbooks.

I'm planning to go get a new one after work tomorrow if I can't get one secondhand.

i'm going backwards. rather than upgrading my mac laptop, i'm looking to downgrade it to osx 10.4 (tiger).

does anyone know where i can find a copy of an older apple operating system?
almost everyone i see in the cafes with macs are running updated leopard or snow leopard. if anyone has upgraded lately, and no longer needs their original osx 10.4 disks, maybe we can work out a deal ($, box of kickass cupcakes, ?).

ideas? thanks!!

I'm looking for anyone who is savvy with TVs, Computers, or other electronics and can replace a capacitor on the power board for my plasma TV.

I have isolated the problem, and removed the board, now I need someone who knows what they are doing to take a look and replace the part. Does anyone have this skill, or can anyone recommend a good repair shop that wont totally rip me off on what should be a 20 min job to replace a $1.84 part?

Does anyone know of a place in the Boston/Somerville area where I might be able to find a 15,000 rpm internal SAS hard disk between now and Monday morning? I'm in one of those situations where I need this part and I cannot wait for it to be delivered by mail order.

Any suggestions? Help would be much appreciated.

Places I've already tried include:
-Micro Center in Cambridge (I don't think they even knew what I was talking about)
-Micro Computers in Medford
-Micro Northeast in Woburn (they're not open, even though they might well have what I'm looking for)

Thank you greatly in advance!
