Does anyone know how much it costs to have a driveway, sidewalk, porch etc shoveled? I live in a multifamily house and may propose we all chip in for this service instead of waiting around to see who finally caves in, but I have no idea how much this costs. Any suggestions?

On that same note, I was wondering if anyone knew if it was sheer folly to find someone for a one-time sidewalk/driveway/front entry snow clearance on Sunday. We're going to be out of town, and I'm a dolt for not thinking of this sooner, but I'd gotten too used to my past several landlords who had a property manager or minion take care of the snow. I'm in a minor panic.

But reliable teenagers are as rare as hen's teeth!

I have a teenage son and his friend looking for snow removal jobs. We live in Davis Square and I can vouch for them. Should I send them over to you?

Any chance they'd take a snow removal job in Inman Square? I have to find someone to shovel the steps and sidewalk, should it snow between 12/25 and 1/3.

It prolly depends on how much snow/clearing area you've got.

You may have luck putting up a sign with a phone number and putting it on the snowbank/corner nearby. There may be a bunch of snow removal/"dudes with shovels" with a eye to the money to be made inbetween scheduled jobs.

The only thing I'd look out for, is that sometimes if you contract with a service they may charge "per visit" which means that your walkway will be completely clear the whole time, but it may be overkill and expensive.

I thought that this very topic was discussed in this very blog semi-recently. I even responded with an answer to this. I went back through October 5 and couldn't find it.

So. Landscapers often do private snow removal in winter. However, it can get pricy on an exponential scale with the amount of snow that falls. I have a large driveway, but it's rectangular and easy to clear. I was charged $35 for 1-3 inches of removal, and $70 for 4-6 inches. But once for a 2 foot snowfall, they charged me in excess of $600-800. Yup, almost a grand for ONE swipe with their pickup truck + plowfront. I refused to pay, came to a financial agreement with them, and got myself a really good snowblower for $1K the next year.

However, since sidewalk/porch wasn't in my agreement, I don't know how much they'd charge for that essentially manual task. They offered, but I declined (figuring I could handle a shovel, but needed help with my driveway.)

2 guys in my neighborhood are walking up and down selling that service. I am paying $30 for stairs, plowed in sidewalk, clearing off a car and 2 car driveway.
