another provocative question--

does anyone know anything about the mentally ill guy that hangs around powderhouse square? usually asks for a cigarette and goes into a litany that references st. teresa and always ends in 'peace'.....?

Yeah, he freaked me out a little the first time I encountered him, but from what I hear from my roommates (who've lived here longer than I have) and local business owners, he's all right, safe and eveyrthing. But I don't actually know anything about what he does or why he's there.

I've never seen any one down by Powderhouse but what's he look like? I may have seen him otherwise.

I've actually gotten to recognize some of our local mentally ill and homeless, from my weekly food delivery runs. Some hang out at the Ruby Rogers center (http://www.m-power.org/ruby.html) in Union Square (it used to be in Davis), or at CASPAR (http://www.4drugrehab.com/facility-5175.html) if they're substance-abusing.

From my interactions with them, they can be disconcerting but they're generally harmless, more concerned with their own inner world than anybody outside them. One guy insists on giving me a tip for every delivery ... It's usually pennies and maybe a nickel, under ten cents. I eventually wound up just taking them; it makes him happy.

I know the guy you mean. Generally, yes, he's mostly harmless. Occasionally, he's having an off day and being more verbally hauranging than usual. Give him a bit of a berth on those days, or tell him directly "Not today". He is usually responsive to that. But as to his name or his history, I don't know it. If you learn it, please let me know. -H...

That's Mike. He's deaf but very vocal. In the 3-4 years I've passed him daily on my way home, I've never seen him physically touch anyone, but he can be very frightening if he's in a tirade. If he's behaving in a way that feels frightening to you, just keep walking without making eye contact. Also, never sit on the bench across the street from Yoshi's/What's Cookin'. He lives on that bench during the daytime and he's fiercely territorial about it.
