I was just curious if anyone had been to Dr. Manuela C Matei at Harvard Vanguard? I just had to pick a new primary care physician (My other one was HORRIBLE), and I haven't been to see Dr. Matei yet.

Fingers crossed that she is kind and competent...

Some previous discussion here. There may be other relevant posts under the tag that I just added.

Who was your 'other one' ?

IDK if this is helpful, but I see Dr. Hobbs at Harvard Vanguard (the one in Davis) and I FREAKING LOVE HER. She isn't necessarily cuddly and full of hugs, but she is VERY understanding, assumes nothing, and I have enjoyed generally great service from her and her staff.

Ask a lot of questions.

If something doesn't make sense, probably it doesn't. Don't trust your doctor. Really.

Dr. Matei

I really like Dr. Matei. If you are looking for someone who is going to give it to you straight then she's your woman. My yearly appointment she spent 45 minutes with me going over history in detail (lots of cancer in my family) so she really wanted to know about my food choices, lifestyle etc. I had been having a very hard time losing weight even though I was running 5 miles a day. We went over my exercise what I eat & she gave me so great advise & also referred me to a nutritionist for follow up. When I asked about going back on the pill she gave me her opinion about they bad effects of birth control, but told me if it was what I wanted she had no problem with it, she just wanted to make sure I knew all the side effects. When I left she gave me tons of print outs on some different health things we had discussed. In all honesty it was possilby my most detailed yearly visit ever.

I've personally given up on finding a PCP at Harvard Vanguard. Tried Matei and Slavsky. Hobbs was my last, best hope and had a terrible appointment with her (though, I should blame the MA, in large part). I also found the Harvard Vanguard "system" very frustrating.

I've had Somerville Family Practice recommended by a lot of people and am planning on switching there.

I hope you end up finding someone you like!

I wasn't a fan of Slavsky either.

If you don't have to stay at Harvard Vanguard, Dr. Terera Corcoran at Cambridge Family Health in Inman Square is *wonderful*!

my experience is that she's very brusque and no nonsense and does not like chit chat at all. I'm sure she's probably a good doctor, but I really didn't like her.

I liked Dr. Matei. For a PCP, she seemed like a good choice. I've moved since then, but I saw her a few times and thought she was competent and patient and responsive.

Dr Matei is my PCP and overall she's OK. I think she's competent, but don't expect chit chat. Each time I feel that she tries to keep the length of the visit to a minimum. I don't have any health problems, so that's OK I guess. And of course she always asks if there's something bothering you or you want to mention. And yes, ask lots of questions: sometimes she thinks we all have a med degree.

meh. I used to see her. Didn't love her, didn't hate her. She was okay, but it kinda felt like self-service doctoring. Like I could go in there and ask her things, but she wasn't very proactive about suggesting solutions or explaining things, she sort of expected me to come in and tell her what I wanted her to do. Then I had a bad experience where she made a really questionable call and I just decided enough. Also, I am now so glad to be out of the whole HV institution, I'll take the non-factory medical care, please. kthx.
If you're open to a small practice, I highly recommend Somerville Family Practice (http://www.yelp.com/biz/somerville-family-practice-somerville) (I see Dr. Fishman, and love her.)
