Are there any decent pawn shops in the area? I've got some small electronics that I'm interested in selling, and don't have the patience to deal with meeting people from Craigslist or mailing/paypaling Ebay stuff right now.

I've not heard of any in Somerville itself, but I might have missed something. Otherwise, does anyone have any good experience with any pawn shops anywhere within biking/walking distance (5 miles or so) of Somerville?

I believe there are a couple in downtown Malden, like a block from the Malden center Orange line stop. Sorry I don't have further info - I've just walked by them.

If you want to sell stuff, [livejournal.com profile] davis_square isn't a bad place to do it. You'll be dealing with local folks that you can meet in person, and not strangers from who knows where. And you'll probably get a better price here than you would at a pawn shop.

There is one on Boston ave in Medford. I can't recall the name, but I've passed it a few times.

it's called L. Gersh Auctions (according to google maps), and it's at the corner of boston ave and north st in medford (only about 1 and a half miles from davis square, and both the 94 and 80 buses stop right in front of it).

You can find them...

/me notices that a number of these shops appear to want only gold or diamonds, and that one of them is actually called "WTF Collateral".

I agree, but was amused by the name of that shop. I still think selling stuff privately here on LJ is a better bet than a pawn shop.

You're probably right, but it does involve a certain amount of potentially inconvenient dealing with buyers, which seems to be what the original poster wanted to avoid. I kind of understand: I have a bunch of stuff I should probably ebay, but it's so tedious to prep it and photograph it and package it and list it for sale and ship it, especially for a largeish number of small items.

Another idea is, I've read about stores that specialize in selling your stuff for you on ebay: you bring it in, they sell it and ship it and all that for you, they take a cut, and you get money. I don't know if there are any around here though.

There is one. It's called On-Line Sales, and it's at the corner of Boston and North. It's pays you upfront half the value of what the item sells for on eBay (or at least that's what the article says. I've never actually done business with the place.)

There was an article about the place in the Medford paper recently:

Thirty-five bottles of red followed by crystal meth seems to have diminishing returns. Or so says the rabbit.

One of my favorite tools for helping oneself on the Internet is using regionally-themed social networking sites to ask local people about their experiences handling local problems. Just call me a Luddite!
