I'm seeing a show at the Somerville Theatre soon, and I've only been to Davis Square once. I loved the area and would like to do a little exploring before the show. I know this comm is crawling with restaurant reviews, but can anyone recommend a good one within easy access to the theatre? Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, but a nice ambience for a small group would be cool.

Anywhere else (cool shops, strange landmarks, awesome places to park) within easy access of the theatre you can tell me about would also be greatly appreciated. (Is that cupcake shop anywhere nearby, perchance?) Apologies if this is the sort of thing that gets asked too often, but I just don't know the area well enough to figure out what goes where.

Thanks!

ETA: This community is amazing. You make me want to move to Somerville. :D

Snappy Sushi is right in the square on Highland. Best sushi in the area, and a really nice, cozy atmosphere :)

I second this.

I've eaten at Snappy Sushi several times lately and I second the recommendation. I suggest ordering some of the fancy rolls, not very plain stuff. The plain stuff isn't their forte. The weirder it sounds, the better it is, seems to be the rule there.

Are they still only doing brown rice sushi? If so, it's not a good choice if you're a sushi purist. It does have good ambiance though, especially if you sit at the big table.

Actually, although they call it "brown rice" it is very authentic. It's a special kind of short-grain rice, usually only found in Japan, that they mill themselves, taking off most of the hull. It doesn't taste anything like normal brown rice, it's very sweet!

I agree that it doesn't taste like regular brown rice. It also doesn't taste quite like regular sushi rice. If you go in with the right expectations, it's fine. But if you have someone in your group who will be disappointed that there's no white rice, it's not a great choice.

Goodness. I love my sushi with brown rice, and these days don't eat sushi much because of the white rice. (When I eat sushi I usually get it from Whole Foods because they have some brown rice salmon and tuna rolls).

So, I guess I oughta get me to Snappy Sushi!
