Hey guys, I'd love to find a regular volunteering gig, for one-two hours two-five days/week, preferably in the morning.  Anybody know a good org that needs something like that--or how to find one?

Horizons for Homeless Children has morning shifts that are really fun - they will only assign you to one day a week, but it's such an awesome opportunity if you like kids that I had to mention it.

Northeastern University has a great department of community service and if you called them, I bet they would forward along their newsletter for more volunteer ideas.

Check idealist.org. It's a great place to find both volunteer opportunities and non-profit jobs.

organizations are flexible. find ones that meet your interests and then talk to them about what they need and what you can do to help them. most often, they're way more flexible than what the websites may imply.

that said, one hour a day may be difficult - you may wish to try two hours every other day. of course it all depends on what type of work you're doing.

good luck!

what are your skills? You can always try someplace like Volunteer Match, but most places looking for volunteers want to know specifically what you can do.

I'm involved in some nonprofits in Somerville, I'd be glad to ask around.

Might I recommend...

You can put in your zip and search for volunteering opportunities near you. I didn't give it a shot for this instance, but my organization signed up for it a few months back. Maybe it'll help?

Greater Boston Food Bank is always looking, and they're fairly flexible, though not close to Somerville.

Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic lets you set your own hours, and read fun things, in a fancy recording studio. They're in Porter.

I was also going to recommend this. I volunteer here and it's a ton of fun and a super flexible schedule.

Ten Thousand Villages in Central Square uses volunteers. They are a fair trade non-profit store. 617-876-2414 or cambridge@tenthousandvillages.com

Samaritans of Boston (http://www.samaritansofboston.org), located downtown near Park street is a great organization that's always looking for new volunteers to help with their suicide prevention hot lines.

I have worked with a bunch of different organizations in the area, and they are one of the best organized and well run that I've seen. For new volunteers, they provided an intensive training program to help you learn about their philosophy and techniques and can be quite flexible with the hours you work after you've been trained. I know they are particularly looking for people during the day, as many of their volunteers have 9 to 5 jobs.

What kind of work are you looking for? My workplace could always use volunteers and interns, but I don't know if you'd be interested in what we do. Also, Cambridge Cares About AIDS (http://www.ccaa.org/) is always looking for volunteers at any of their many programs, if you're more interested in direct service volunteerism.

http://www.bostoncares.org - where most of my arts organizations get volunteers. Although bigger places, like the MFA, have their own volunteer banks - and I'm sure are looking for folks.

http://www.hireculture.org - has not only volunteer and internship gigs, but jobs as well, in the arts and humanities.

Most libraries accept volunteers. The Medford public library allows you to volunteer on a drop-in basis. I don't know about Somerville.
