Janeane Garofalo is performing at the Somerville Theatre tonight as part of the AltCom (Alternative Comedy) Festival. The 'Teabaggers' from New Bedford are coming to Davis Square to protest this, according to the Boston Herald and the Somerville Journal Blog.

Edit: See also the Boston Herald's earlier Inside Track column on this.

I don't know what Janeane Garofalo's stand-up is like, but I'd pay money to see Myq Kaplan.

I read the Herald article, and I don't get what the kerfuffle is all about. Garofalo is under the impression that people who participate in tea party protests are racist, and conservatives are protesting her bigotry? This sounds all sorts of wrong...usually it is liberals who protest bigotry? Am I misunderstanding what is going on here?

I am confused. Did my world turn upside down when I was not looking?

In any case, I think "lol" is a perfect entry tag for this post. :)

"Reverse racism" is a popular phrase amongst conservatives. It's great for convincing people who aren't rich that they might be rich if it wasn't for all of those breaks the people who don't look like them are getting (because institutional racism doesn't exist in Obama's America, doncha know), which means they should side with the rich conservatives who clearly are looking out for them by informing them of this injustice. Rich conservatives are full of love for their fellow man, as they demonstrate by telling them it's entirely their fault they aren't rich too (it can't be because rich people stack the deck in their own favor using their money and by extension influence, no no no), they need to work harder or smarter or make sure gays don't get married or something and *then* they can be rich. After all, they should know, they're already rich!

Janeane Garofalo stated, on MSNBC, that she thought that large portions of the tax protesters that came out of the wood work when President Obama was trying to pass his budget were not really there to protest taxation, but where angry that this nation had a black man as President, and were using this issue as a convenient excuse to protest Obama working from the Oval Office. This annoyed large portions of the conservative populace that supported increased spending during the Bush years, so a group from New Bedford is coming to Davis Sq looking for a fight.

FWIW, to some degree, I agree with her. A number of White Supremacy groups also have a history of tax protests and being opposed to funding the government to allow it to govern. But it is more complex then that.... Which Janeane later stated. In short, an overly simplified comment is leading to more political silliness then it deserves.

Mid to late last year, the right wing finally caught on to the fact that we liberals have been calling them "bigots" and "intolerant", and that it was working. (Because it's true...) In an apparent move to try to protect their image, they turned around and started accusing liberals of being "bigots" and "intolerant" for... not tolerating their bigotry and intolerance. A sort of "you're intolerant of my discrimination against you!" (Damn right!)

Anyway, it makes for some odd outbursts on their part. Unfortunately, while it's probably not winning them any converts, it's probably working very well at helping to keep their rabid followers rabid.

Oo ooo oo, can I counter-protest with a sign that says "Pay your taxes, you unAmerican whiners?" I've always wanted to beat the conservatives at their holier-than-thou game.

That would be awesome.

If you REALLY want to wind them up, ask them about Obama's tax plan, and whether they fall into the proportion getting a tax cut or the proportion that isn't.

There are a few who attend these protests who really actually know the budget pretty well and have objections that, while I don't agree, are well-reasoned. Now, the people who got a $9/week cut in payroll taxes? And haven't noticed? Those are the ones you make fun of.

I'm tempted to show up with a sign that simply says "NOT WITH THESE GUYS".

It might be more effective if I brought a few friends along and we all dressed as historic Boston landmarks. You know, the Bunker Hill monument, the Old North Church, Mayor Menino, etc.

Someone needs to get in touch with the local chapter of "Billionaires for Bush", stat.

"Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?"

From: [identity profile] sonofabish.livejournal.com
Funny you mention them. I was telling someone about the big anti-war protest in NYC in 2004. I was trying to put together a story and the "Billionaires for Bush" were there, and I got talking to one of the women involved and was told their "counter-protest" involved tea and crumpets and a polo match in Central Park. I asked who won the polo match and she smiled and said "Silly man- the rich won. The rich always win."

Best off-the-cuff retort EVAH.

Anywho, sorry I was working and missed the chance to catch this circus. I would have enjoying taunting the right-wing shitheads.

Can I get a clearer definition of what a nut is?

I'm considering attending this because I think lowering or eliminating federal taxes them will:
- force the federal government to reduce spending
- thus improving the long term health of our unreasonably indebted nation
- will limit the power of federal government which would prevent the govt from get involved in stupid wars and other high-cost shenanigans
- prevent govt from handing out billions to corrupt companies
- will shift more power and responsibility to the states which could tax more and spend more to their liking

Dang, until this moment I didn't realize that I'm a nut. Thanks for pointing that out. I see the error of my ways.

The last time I was promised an awesome fight was when [livejournal.com profile] anomie666 issued a throwdown to the weirdo puppet show dude in Harvard Square, only it turned out that it was only someone posing as the weirdo puppet show dude, so I was greatly disappointed and life went on as usual so I think I'll be giving this little show a pass-a-roo if it's all right with you.

I agree with most of Smoterh's comments. This site seems to prove the theory that 'liberals' are the ones who are intolerant. They will not accept an opinion as worthy of discussion if it is not their opinion.
And thanks, so much, Obama for the 'tax cut'. That extra $12.00 I'm getting will pay for, I don't know, what? Oh, yes, maybe some of the 'hidden' taxes and fees that are slowly but surely coming down the pike.
And by the way, what is the date of the Anti-War protest which is surely being planned to protest the fact that Obama is seriously escalating a war in Afghanistan/Pakistan?
Silence.............

I, for one, fully accept the right of anybody to have any opinion they want. I also fully accept the right to mock those whose opinions I find silly. I don't find anti-tax sentiment, in and of itself, silly. I find this particular protest to be silly. If the teabaggers can't handle a little mockery for having nothing better to do on a Friday night, they have no business being there in the first place.

As for the Afghanistan/Pakistan war, well, I'm uneasy about it but perhaps we wouldn't be in this situation if King George II hadn't decided that using the military to avenge Daddy was a good idea. I'm not happy with what's going on out that way but I don't feel inclined to take to the streets just yet. That said, I, the Pope-like one-and-only voice of all things anti-conservative, will be happy to protest when the time is right, and so will the millions of anti-war types out there whom I command with the tips of my ball hairs.

(Besides, I wonder how many of the teabaggers decry war protesters as bored students with no idea how reality works. Oh, the delicious irony....)

Well, if unemployment reaches 15%
