Around 11pm last night (5/9) I thought I heard gun shots coming from the Davis square area. I initially thought it was just fireworks or something, but a few minutes later I heard sirens and then more sirens. The sirens continued for awhile coming from all directions. I and some of my friends noticed a bunch of police cars driving around today, more then usual.

I checked around online, but I did not see any stories related to this. Did anyone hear this also?

According to my housemate someone was shot somewhere in the neighborhood between Rindge Ave and Harvey St (between Clifton St and Cedar St) around that time last night - apparently as he was walking home the police stopped him to ask if he'd seen a gun anywhere. That's all I know; if someone has an official news source that would be much better, of course.

Around that time there were 7 emergency vehicles that headed through teele towards Rt 16. 2 police cars, 2 fire engines, 2 ambulances, and a fire chief vehicle. The police cars especially were moving quite fast. I'm told they blocked broadway off, but have no additional information.

I practiced google-fu but did not find an online police log for Somerville. Which surprised me. I could have been looking in all the wrong places, but I'm used to it either being on a city web site or in the local newspaper. All online references were several months out of date.

Not really a police log but

The Somerville Journal has "This week in Somerville Crime" which outlines the arrests for the past week. Unfortunately there's a lag between the crime and the time ... it's certainly not breaking news.

I e-mailed the Cambridge Chronicle to ask what they knew about this. David Harris replied to me, "We're finding out about it now."

This is not the same incident, but happened in the same neighborhood (Jackson Street) on April 30.

The newly posted Cambridge PD daily report mentions two shooting situations in the area that evening; I think the first one is the one referenced above:

Assault to Murder

09-03341

On 5/9/09 at 11:04 PM, it was reported that an unknown black male suspect shot a black male victim in the face in the area of Jackson Circle. There may have been as many as four individuals involved. Two subjects were shot at in a vehicle. The injuries at this time are not life threatening.

Firearm Discharge within 500 Feet of Building

09-03344

On 5/10/09 at 3:21 AM, gunshots were reported in the vicinity of Walden Square. Shattered glass was found on the scene and later in the day, an Arlington resident reported to the police that his vehicle was shot at and his window shattered while he was driving at this same time and location.

The log file quoted above is here.

That's a good 3/4 miles from Davis Square. Can gunshots really be heard that far away?

It's very possible to hear gunshots from that distance. When I lived in Reading, PA I lived on the otherside of the city from where the majority of shootings happened & I could hear them all the time & that was usually 2-3 miles away. It depends on how the area is set up - at that time for me I was up on a hill that overlooked the entire city, so I heard it all as it echoed.
If there's lots of concrete & buildings there will be echo & even if they didn't hear the actual shot in Davis they may have heard the echo it created.

Wicked Local (Cambridge Chronicle) article on several recent violent crimes, including the one apparently reported here.
