Does anyone know of a pick-your-own strawberry place in the area? Preferably on the T? There used to be one near my grandmother's in Concord, but they closed when I was in High School.

Ooh--pick your own strawberry sites? I did not even know of such places. I would like to know this, too.

There's a commuter train to Franklin. How close is the farm to either of the train stations there?

I once did some picking of exquisite peaches in Japan, only to have their delicateness reduced to pulp by the vibration of my bicycle. Not recommended.

oh :( really??

parlee's farm in chelmsford had huuuuge fields of pick your own strawberries. not T accessible unfortunately and a bit far for most folks in boston.

generally as soon as you go outside the 495 belt, they are everywhere :)

the greater lowell area has TONS of these places. i am not sure how accessible they are from the commuter rail though -- probably not very if at all.

Verrill Farm in (I think) Concord.

There are also lots of others, as has been noted -- the internet can tell you more. (There's a place in Tyngsboro I went once, but that's farther away.)

Long bike ride (for this purpose) from the T station, though. About three miles, I think.

Verrill had a disastrous fire last September. Have they recovered fully from it?

According to the last time I checked the Verrill Farm website, they have recovered, at least to the point that they're planning their usual summer festivals (including the strawberry shortcake one on, if memory serves, June 30th).

They are rebuilding, and I don't think they have to be fully rebuilt to patronize, especially for pick yr own.

We always go to Verrill Farm about the second week of June. IIRC, you can only pick in the morning (9 to noonish) because it gets too hot in the afternoon.

Was #1 on list of cheap things to do in Boston in Summer.

Not sure where this farm is though.

It says South Natick. http://www.lookoutfarm.com/ . Could bike from Wellesley or Natick stations, but it's (again) about 3 miles.

That Boston.com page has a link to a map of strawberry farms, which may be useful. The farms in Ipswich, Sharon, Sherborn, and Weston look like they're also bikeable from a T station.... but heed [livejournal.com profile] dominika_kretek's warning above.

You could also post here looking for someone who'd do the driving to a PYO. I bet you'd find at least one taker, and possibly fill a car.

I was going to suggest this. An activity like this would probably attract a taker. especially if you offer gas money.

I would SO be onboard with this! I don't have a car, but I do have gas money.

I used to go berry picking at Wards Berry Farm in Sharon. Also probably not super convenient. The commuter rail does go to Sharon and it is a nice bike ride from there, but probably too far for a walk.
