Highly recommended: If you're making a large wine purchase, Ball Square Fine Wines is awesome. This month, wine is 20% off. And they'll be super nice to you.

Actually, they'll be super nice to you whether you're making a large purchase or a small one, 'cause they're great.

Very true! They even special-ordered a keg of root beer for me for a party.

Ok, that is seriously awesome. What kind of root beer can you get in a keg?

Hm, I can't remember the brewery now. But it was pretty darn tasty.

They are the awesome. Our household (with a SERIOUS wine hobbiest) are regulars there. And they'll put you into their data base where you can record your feelings about every wine you've ever purchased.

This appeals to the geek in me.

Nice!

You may also wish to check out:
Binendswine.com (out of Quincy but they deliver anywhere in the region for free-- plenty of daily closeout specials).

Downtown has regular sales (look out for their grand tastings)

Wine & Cheese Cask also has big sales periodically.

I love ball square's friday wine and beer tastings; and have a large collection of pint glasses to show for it as well.

They will also special order any wine for you free of charge that you can add to your 20% off purchase.

They are truly great people here. I loved Downtown Wine & Spirits when I lived closer to Davis, but after going at least once a week for over a year (that's what grad school will do to ya), it was a little disheartening when no one ever showed a hint of recognition... the people at Ball Square know us by name and are infinitely more helpful with both beer and wine.

I asked them to special order a Macedonian white wine called Temjanika and they weren't able to get it. Sabur restaurant in teele square serves it so I know it's available somewhere.

Did you ask Sabur where they got it?

The manager of sabur claimed only he can get it. I doubt his claim. I don't doubt that he wants me to continue coming to Sabur to order it.

I'm sure he wants you to continue coming to Sabur.

That said, it is entirely plausible that he is the only importer into MA or works with an exclusive importer.

Next time you're in NY try looking there - their import laws are laxer, so more wines make it there.

Wine Shops

I like Ball Sq Wines too (especially the wine tastings!) but my favorite shop in the area is now Dave's Fresh Pasta. They have a newly renovated wine room with a lot of off-the-beaten-path bottles. You probably won't see a lot of familiar labels which makes it a little intimidating at first, but Felisha the resident wine guru is very knowledgeable and helpful. It's much less confusing than it used to be before the renovation where the wines seemed to be all jumbled together near the cash registers.

They're pretty good. Reasonable prices and good selection, they have a great cooler of beer. They have a lot of tastings on fridays too.

And good news, they're expanding! They will be taking over the former chocolatier's place next door and tearing out the wall. They will remain open during the renovation. More wine for all!
