Before that, absolutely, all the time. That's why I got the PO Box.
Even after I got the PO Box, I'd get random mail for other people who lived at different addresses all the time, including a few credit card statements...
I'm not sure I can remember the last time I got mail on a Monday. It's also incredibly rare that a letter I expect *never* shows up, which has made me figure it's a mail carrier doing something funny, not neighbors stealing mail or whatever.
About a year and a half ago, I had to file a complaint for opened mail. Anything that looked like a check, coupons, etc. The postal service was not especially helpful. Seems to have calmed down since.
Mail has also been suspiciously light since the monsoon started :-S
Our carrier seems to have a habitual problem with not picking up mail we leave out for delivery; don't know whether to file a complaint (which may encourage retribution) or to just keep bringing mail into the office and mailing it from here.
The weekend carrier is happy to just dump mail for both units into whichever mailbox he feels compelled to leave it in.
Our weekend carrier does the same, just dumps it through our front door "mail" slot, not into our individual boxes, I sometimes wonder if they're given the set of keys that the week person has, or are just generally uninformed.
At least he uses the mail slot. The regular carrier at my old place in Teele refused to use ours -- he just dumped the mail in between the screen door and the door, with varying rates of success. I loved coming home to find my credit card statements sitting on the porch floor.
Perhaps you should clarify with postal authorities whether letter carriers should be picking up outgoing mail around here in the first place. My guess is that they aren't expected to do so, as they are on foot and don't have the means of collecting, carrying and sorting outgoing mail that a car-based letter carrier in the suburbs would have.
I actually asked my mail carrier whether it was OK to leave things to pick up, and he had no problem with it. We've changed carriers since and have lots of substitutes, but they all pick up fine.
They never look in the box, though; I clothespin outgoing mail to the outside of the box so it's really obvious. Maybe this is normal. I learned it after asking my sister-in-law why the clothespin on her mailbox!
(I'd always had truck-delivered mail to mailboxes with flags to indicated outgoing mail before, except when I lived here during grad school & had a big blue mailbox within a block of me, so this is my first experience with mailing from this sort of home mailbox.)
As for mail, mine delivery seems fine, except when the water department doubled a letter in my street name and I didn't get any bills for a year. Thank goodness I had a big credit from correction of estimated bills to the previous owner! When I saw the problem and called them, the next bill reached me. But seriously, a glance and you should have been able to tell the correct street.
My other gripe is that when you have them hold mail for vacation and check "deliver mail when hold expires" they never do - I have to go to Union Square and stand in line to get it every time.
YES. In fact, I just called the Post Office today. We moved from the 3rd floor to the 1st floor in a 3 family, sent in our change of address on May 29, and are receiving maybe 2 pieces of mail a week. We've only gotten 1 actual piece of forwarded mail so far, and it had the correct address on it, with a forwarding sticker slapped on. I'll post back tomorrow or the next day - the guy who answered the phone was great, and as confused about the problem as I am. His supervisor is going to ask my mail carrier just what the heck they are doing with my mail, and then call me.
I've had other problems in the summer before, and I suspect that the issue may be people covering unfamiliar routes/shifts within the PO because of vacations.
Lots of mail for our previous tenant (which was getting forwarded easily enough before) showing up at our place, with the usual mail dropped in a pile inside the door on weekends (the weekend person doesn't have keys for our mailbox or doesn't care) but the forwarding issue is new..
In that case it would have been January, not now. Wikipedia says 1 year, I haven't yet found info on usps, even on the page for mail forwarding, and I've gotten mail from addresses I left 2-3 years ago, amazingly enough. I just think that the summer help started and people aren't paying attention :)
Yes, for years now. We always get mail for the neighbors and are always missing mail. Often important mail. We like to receive those fliers, everybody in our apartments gets them but us. Similar to what someone else said, if there is any kind of weather either it doesn't get here until 8PM or we just don't get it at all. A few days recently it didn't come until well into the evening and people here barely got any.
I have friends in Somerville with the same issues. friends, neighbors, myself] We've all called our post offices [Davis and Washington Street] and they are of no help. They either say call back because the carrier isn't in or they give us the brush off. Completely irresponsible. I miss when I was a kid waiting for a card or gift. Mail always came around 9-10 in the morning. Now we're lucky if we get any of our mail by 2PM.
Actually, the last few months have been much improved. So two years of monthly complaints at least got the sloppy clowns off my route. Looking at other comments, yeah the ones who dump it all in one box, or even wrong house. Had plenty of that in the past. Seems to be mostly (but not totally) better.
Our mail is thrown onto the foyer and comes maybe two to three times a week. I am waiting for a concert ticket that I need TODAY and I doubt it will get here.
Yeah, I've got an Amazon package that's taking it's sweet time to arrive. When I check the tracking number it says it arrived in central Boston from CA on the 22nd (monday) and it's still not here.
4 days to cross a river? I think not. Though I've heard that rough weather can slow the package people down.

Haven't knowingly missed anything (or anything else) in the last year or so.

I think maybe you can also pay extra postage to have mail forwarded...I think that applies to bulk mail.
