Is there a place in the general vicinity that sells scratch-and-dent appliances, specifically washing machines?  My Google-fu is failing me, and LJ seek can't find this question before (so I apologize if this has come up before!).  I'd prefer someplace local, but we have a car so it's not a big deal if it's out of the general Davis area.

Your best bet might be to go to a major appliance place like Sozio and ask. Ask when they get rid of their floor models, too--you might get a deal on something that's been out on the sales floor and where people have been fiddling with the knobs and such.

I know Sears used to have scratch-and-dent stores. There was one in the town I grew up in in NJ.

Also, check craigslist, and/or ask around among your friends, and see if you can find a deal on something used? Washing machines tend to last a good long time, and often people put perfectly good stuff up for sale cheap if they have a washing machine they can't take with them in a house move. (E.g. they're moving out of the area, moving into a place that has a W&D already installed, etc.) That's how I got my washer and dryer cheap--friend of mine was moving out of the area and I took them off her hands.

ETA:
google search for "scratch and dent appliances boston" comes up with this:
http://neappliance.com/about.php I also remember there being a place in Malden Center that sold used appliances. I think it's on Ferry St, just off Rt 60, but I don't remember the name or the exact location, and it's been 6 years since I lived in Malden so it may not be there any more.

Just a note - we tried to buy a dented refrigerator from them and ended up in a big go-round with them holding onto our money until we pointed out that we'd be going to the DA to report them for bait & switch. Then they finally gave it back.

I'm a big fan of shopping local, but after what we went through, Sozio's off my list.

The only problem with buying one on Craigslist is you have to go get it, transport it to your home, and move it in. I'd probably have a W&D set right now if I had a truck and 2 someones to help me move a W&D into my basement of doom. :-(

That being said, the scratch & dent places may not offer delivery.

Rent a truck and bribe two friends with dinner/cookies/whatever? Even after you figure in the costs of the truck rental, might still be a good deal.

New England Appliance (http://www.neappliance.com/) in Braintree has new and "scratch and dent" appliances, according to their website.

Sears has an outlet store (http://www.searsoutlet.com/d/index.jsp) way the hell out in Shrewsbury.

(FWIW, I googled for '"appliance outlet" boston' and found these that way.)

FWIW, we bought washer, dryer, and fridge from this Sears scratch and dent. TONS of appliances to choose from. Worth a trip for such a big purchase, I'd say. They do have delivery as well, for a price (don't remember exactly) and is awesome for heavy appliances because they bring it up your narrow stairway that would be impossible for regular folks like us to do by themselves.

Might be a little more complicated to look up but if the other leads don't pan out you might want to try Freight companies. Sometimes they auction off or sell scratch and dent items. I worked for Estes Express Lines in Indiana and they had a lot of Frigidaire products we had trucks and trucks of the stuff and with so much product there's a lot that doesn't remain perfectly intact. I know there's Estes Express Lines out this way I've seen some city drivers go by.

There's a place down on Washington (East `ville) that sells *used* appliances. I can vouch for them--that's where I bought my super-awesome fridge.
