ETA: Just before the (AWESOME!) show, the host announced that due to assorted sponsorships and donations, the event didn't cost the taxpayers anything. So to anyone who still wants to harp on that, STFU in advance. HTH, HAND.
Because those sponsorships couldn't have gone to an after school program to teach kids about, oh, I don't know, science? Art? Sustainable living? Theater?
Or it couldn't possibly have been used to fund domestic violence programs. Or Big Brother Big Sister programs. Or elder care programs. Or...
They sponsored the pretty bombs because that's what the city asked for. This is a city initiated event. Do you really think the time, energy, and other resources the city spent making this happen is appropriate, given the problems the world is facing these days?
Yeah, I'm with you on this one. I mean, I love art, and exciting things, but "small town" fireworks are such a waste of money and energy that could be put to much more interesting and valuable things. But hey, what are you gonna do?
Which I did. Multiple times. No response. Joe keeps perpetuating the lie that the city spent no dollars on the event because NSTAR sponsored it. This is a blatant lie because: 1) NSTAR did not pay for overtime for all the city workers and infrastructure required; 2) NSTAR could have sponsored something else, instead of the fireworks, assuming they have a fixed budget for PR events. Again, Joe, post detailed information about the cost of this event, who paid it and where the money came from.
Oh! That is not a bad idea, in principle... But my roof is quite steep and my entire roof garden would collapse if it rains a bit too much :-\ If I move to CA or some other sunny state I'll think seriously about that and solar power too... Here I'm kinda stuck...

In another decade or so, you'll be able to pay off your mortgage with apples.
