Sad. Just sad. And greedy. According to an employee the rent situation is "out of control" therefore Hollywood Express is merging the Davis Sq. stock into their Porter Sq. store. The Davis location will be closed as of July 27. If you have an account and go in before the closing day, you can get a coupon for 10 free rentals to be used by (I believe) September at the Porter location only. Yet another local store pushed out.

Rents in the square will get worse before they get better. The monstrosity that they are allowing to be built beside the Rosebud is the beginning of the end of the character of Davis Square. Small local businesses will not be able to compete/survive.

I don't see how that new building is displacing any local businesses. It's only going to have one retail storefront, anyway.

big building

Whaaaat?! What do you think they're putting in there, a Wal-Mart?

Does the city at least get more taxes out of it?

Adding more retail space directly puts downward pressure on rents (doesn't necessarily mean lowering them, could just mean slowing their increase). The only way it can result in higher rents is if it contributes enough value to the area that it makes every other location in the area that much more desireable. So I don't understand how you can blame it for this.
