I live right in the Square, I can hear just about everything; the songs you play at the stop light, the conversations you have when you get off the T and all the singers who perform in the Square. This evening (Saturday) there was a man singing and playing his guitar with a volume that could have made him heard to the other side of Porter Square.

WHAT IS UP WITH THAT???

Most everyone else who sings in the square plays loud enough for the people in the square to hear them...

I'm totally sympathetic but...

Be ready to be swamped by the usual "loser, if you don't like the noise go live in the Midwest" kind of replies... Just saying...

if the shoe fits...

I propose a citizen's ban on the use of "just saying" in blogs. Where did this trend start where people end their posts with "just saying"? Of course you're "just saying". That's what a post is! It reminds me of the "...wait for it..." trend that started after that stupid Superman movie came out. So what movie started the "just saying" trend?

BTW, don't take this as an attack on you. I enjoy your posts mostly. I just need to vent after seeing that in 3 different LJ posts on my friends feed today.

Also, I hate the word "purported". Is that not one of the ugliest words in the English language? When someone says it vocally, it's fine. But when I read it somewhere it just stands out like a sore thumb. Someone should code a Microsoft office macro virus that deletes that word from every MS Office dictionary out there.

Oh.. and I don't the original poster was complaining, but was more wondering why the guy was so freakin' loud today. I bet he was ticked off at reading "just saying" in his LJ, so he needed some primal scream therapy.

Dunno, I had an asshole friend in college (in 1994) who said that constantly.

It is pretty clear what people mean with "just saying"... Lacking facial expressions on blogs, one conveys that one is not trying to stir up trouble, but pointing out something in a neutral manner. One could certainly use twenty words to say the same. Works for me.

Do you seriously think that the OP enjoys hearing all the time about everything that goes on in Davis Sq and that was the reason of the post? I doubt it, because if something is not a problem you don't ask rhetorically "WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?". Unless the OP responds himself/herself, we will never know for sure. :)

It was more like classic rock karaoke. He played prerecorded music and back vocals and then planed guitar and sang over them. Very odd. I almost pointed out to him that if he was doing this for money then it is counterproductive to play so loud that nobody would go near him.

Is this the yahoo who can't sing "Brain Damage", by Pink Floyd, correctly, even if his life were on the line?

Whoa. At least it was a reason to actually close the door at JP licks so the Door Enforcers didn't have to give the lecture over and over ;)

It'd really help if they posted a sign. I'm always amazed at how people stand sheeplike in the doorway as the precious A/C cooled air leaks out around them.

I had dinner at Boston Burger Co. last night and heard him out their big open windows. He seemed to be okay when he started, but after I was done and was walking back up Holland I could hear him all the way up past Dave's Pasta, and at that point I went "Yeah, this dude's gettin kinda excessive."

I suspect if this keeps up there'll be some kinda public announcement about buskin' noise levels.

Didn't help that he repeated some songs too soon, too, unless that was my short-term memory playing with me.

A friend of mine took the Red Line up from Quincy to catch the current Theatre@First production last night, but being in the square and having to listen to this, erm, performer started triggering a migraine, which eventually kicked in to the point that she had to leave the church before the plays even started. *grrrrrr* If he comes back and does it all again anytime soon, I'm rather tempted to not only tell him what he can do w/his guitar & amplifier, but help him put it there as well...

Come on you can say it! :)

I would have told him that if he kept it up, I'd be calling the police and reporting a violation of the noise ordinance, which applies to buskers as well as everyone else.

And if he didn't turn that shit down, I would have called the police.

There are noise and time restrictions on street performers. I also think they need a permit but I'm not sure. If you think they're playing too loud, call the police and let them make the determination. If they're playing within the limits they'll at least get a warning that people are complaining about the noise.

Or someone could ask him to turn down the volume. I'm surprised nobody tried that.

Does Somerville require a street musician permit? I googled and couldn't find anything.
