Does anyone have details on the "gourmet oven-made pizza establishment" that is going in on Elm Street, replacing Green Tomato 2? Obvious doubts about the viability of that space aside, I am excited about some new pizza choices in Davis (along with Flatbread in the Sacco's space and Zing over in Porter).

No info, but is gourmet pizza the new burrito? I mean, two places opening at almost the same time, with Zing not that old.

My thoughts exactly.

But it won't matter, whatever goes into that cursed space will be there for 3 months and then close their doors.

I'd be happy with a plain old nicely done Italian pizza. I'm a bit tired of gourmet this and that. It simply seems to be an excuse to charge 16+ bucks for a pizza. While I am at it, I'm also way tired of "Luxury Condo".

I agree with you totally. At our house, we call good old Dial-a-Pizza, and it's absolutely delicious, IMO. Regular, traditional delivery pizza with our choice of regular, traditional toppings. I just don't find anything appealing about a brick-fired slab of ten-grain sourdough topped with braised sea bass and organic blackberries. That's not pizza.

Personally I wish something other than a restaurant would go in there. A small hardware store would be very handy, for instance. But I don't get to plan these things.

I agree too.

I personally vote for The Paddock for the best regular old pizza. Seriously delicious.

But we have Tags Hardware, which is a 7-minute walk from that location.

Aw, I think O'Natural's lasted at least a year, didn't it?

*hopes for tasty pizza to survive*

Carberry's was there for years and years, so.

You know what I want? A chart or something that shows how long each of the places has lasted, cause it seems like Carberry's was there for ages, then the next place lasted an . . . okay . . . amount of time (was that O'Natural's?), but each place after that has had a harder time of it. There must be an equation!

Maybe it's time for another one of [livejournal.com profile] thetathx1138's flowcharts.

I wonder if it was built over an Indian burial ground or if there was the Carbury's Curse ;)

In every town I've lived in, there has always been that one or two cursed commercial spaces that nothing could survive in. Optimistic proprietors would move in, and within a year or two they'd be liquidating. I bet there are people who would blame bad fung shui of the buildings. I don't know enough about it to argue.

400 Highland Ave. was like that, but the current restaurant (Sagra) seems to have broken the curse.

Well, hey, at least the space is going back to its Bertucci's roots, right?

No, 'Tucci's #1 is what's now Subway.

I thought the same thing even though I knew Bertucci's was next door. YOU WERE CLOSE ENOUGH.

No, to go back to its roots, the next occupant would need to be Herrell's Ice Cream.

I'm pretty sure vacant is it's natural state.

Nah. If you've lived here for 20+ years, the original Steve's Ice Cream is its natural state. It didn't use to be a doom-spot until after Carberry's--Steve's was there for more than a decade and then Carberry's was there for years and years.

I remember Carberry's opening and then closing, so not exactly years and years :p Though definitely longer than any place since.

I'm pretty sure it was there for at least 8 years.

Or more: this Phoenix review (http://bostonphoenix.com/archive/food/97/02/06/noshing.html) from early 1997 refers to it.

I don't like how noisy it is in that space. Everything feels amplified by the high ceiling. They would do well put in a drop ceiling if that's logistically possible (I never went into Green Tomato, so maybe they already did).

I wonder if someone should just go in a different direction with the space. Maybe a yoga studio?

I still miss Bertucci's and Carberry's (and Steve's way back in the day) on that block....

We do have a shortage of yoga studios in Cambridge/Somerville. NOT!

Glad you're filling the need left by a lack of snarky posts. We need more of them!
