There's a new yoga studio opening in Union Square.  Today they are having an open house with free classes.  It is located above Bloc 11 Cafe, and is co-owned by firefighters Blanca Alcaraz (also one of the teachers) and Charlie Houghton.  Check them out.....I think they will be very successful.

The Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge was supposed to relocate to that space -- any idea why that did not happen?

Ron;

That plan fell through 3 years ago. I'm not sure exactly why but I do know that the "church apartment" residents next door had noise concerns about the Zeitgeist.

I'm sorry to hear about the philistine NIMBYs. Will a yoga studio be less noisy?

Ron; Would you want live amplified music / bands most nights, 6 feet from your bedroom window a la Zeitgeist?

I wasn't aware that they did this; I thought it was primarily an art gallery with occasional live shows that ended by 11 pm.

They have music shows most nights at Zeitgeist, so yes, a yoga studio would be much less noisy. I don't think it's NIMBYism not to want a live entertainment venue going into a nearby space that was formerly a bank.

Didn't most of the live music go to Lily Pad, which branched off from Zeitgeist and remained in Inman Square?

Another Yoga studio?

Isn't the area kind of saturated?...

Exactly. I wonder if the Yoga thing is only a small part of the actual business.

The West Somerville area seems saturated with yoga studios but I wouldn't say the rest of Somerville is saturated. Admittedly, having 2 new yoga studios open in Union Square this month within a block of each other is unusual. I wish them well. (No place could pry me away from O2 Yoga.)

Also, Ron asked, "Will a yoga studio be less noisy?" Yes, a yoga studio is much quieter than amplified live music. (I too was looking forward to an art gallery above Bloc 11.)

I asked that only because one of the Armory neighbors complained about loud music from a yoga studio there.

I wouldn't say that we're saturated with drugstores, considering that there are none in Union Square, none in East Somerville, and none west of Davis Square.

There's the Rite Aid midway between Porter and Union. But, yeah, Union Square is certainly not "saturated" with drugstores.
