Hello Davis Square,

I come to you today seeking your sage advice.  I am looking for a physical therapist to help me work on some ankle issues.  I don't have a car, so I need something accessible to public transit --  the closer to Davis/Ball/Porter, the better.    Does anyone have a recommendation for someone they've had a good experience with?

Thanks very much!

Barry Meklir at Muscular Solutions (http://www.muscularsolutions.com) in Brookline, right in Coolidge Corner. Fabulously holistic and no bullshit; he's fixed me and many people I know.

Caveat: he does not take insurance.

Edited to fix HTML.

Most physical therapy that is to work on issues such as pronating ankles or things of the like require prior authorization, and most likely not covered. Most health insurance is written such that physical therapy is defined as short-term treatment to an injury with the expectation it will improve within 60 days. If you go to someone and don't say there was an injury involved, it won't be covered by health insurance. Foot orthotics are also not covered most of the time unless for severe diabetic foot disease.

I was a rep for a health insurance company (worst job I've had in my life), and I ran into this a lot. I'd suggest going over your coverage just to make sure this is an option.

If you are not going through insurance, then never mind :)

Definitely read your coverage so you don't get screwed!

Kennedy Brothers' Physical Therapy

I went there for shoulder issues. They were outstanding! Since my insurance didn't cover them (out of network), they gave me a discounted rate.

I had a great experience with Scott McDonough at the Marino Center, which is on Mass Ave down from Davis Square. They take many kinds of insurance. I don't know what their policies are on seeing patients whose primary doctors are not at the center itself, but Scott was awesome!

Seconded. I thought Scott was great and my physical therapy was highly effective. My PCP isn't at Marino, and there was no problem. The one thing to be aware of is that the Marino Center's intake packet is breathtaking huge, and very, very woowoo.

Thirding the Marino Center physical therapy. I worked with both Scott and with Karen Deane there, and they were both excellent.

I had a great experience at Spaulding Rehab near Medford Square. I had a knee injury from running that wasn't responding to the usual ice, ibuprofen, and rest regime. Lauren Nobles at Spaulding spent a lot of time with me and taught me several stretches and strengthening exercises that helped fix my problem and has kept it from recurring, even though I am running much more these days.

Also, Spaulding does take health insurance.

If you wouldn't mind sharing, as a fellow runner, I'd be really interested in hearing more about those stretches and strengthening exercises!

You might see if you can get a referral to Mt. Auburns physical therapy outpatient location at 22 Mill Street in Arlington (http://www.mountauburnhospital.org/body.cfm?id=70) - easily accessible via the 77.

Take your ankle to Scott!

Third-ing the recommendation of Scott McDonough at the Marino Center on Mass Ave, very close to Davis. I've worked with him on a couple of problems and he is great.
