Check out the Logan wind forecast for the next 9 days: 100% NorthWest winds. Know what that means? Planes over Davis the whole time.

Here is the logan live radar: http://www4.passur.com/bos.html

Now lets log as many complaints as we can here, it really makes a difference! http://www.massport.com/logan/airpo_noise_form.aspx

This is what it's come down to? Pre-emptive complaining?

As an avid plane watcher I welcome this development.

While I do sympathize here, you have to be careful about over-posting on one topic. This is the second one in a week. Thanks.

Someone needs to get the pearls and the fainting couch ready! We can't just be clutching and swooning without full preparedness, come on now!

There is been airplanes over my house every day this week. It's really getting annoying. I thought the city was supposed to have a shared burden of plane noise.

Ready for 9 full days of plane noise?

Yes.

I may well be missing something, but my thought is that the airport is virtually surrounded by densely populated land, and that the planes are gonna be flying over _somebody's_ house. All you can do is move the hassle around, which, unless the noise causes you significantly more discomfort than it would the next person, seems dodgy.

For myself, I like hearing jet noise. It reminds me that we still have them, among other things. Er... I know this is idiosyncratic, I wouldn't ask anyone else to feel that way.

frankly i find the complaining much more annoying than the plane noise.

Not only am I ready, but I'm going to be in one of those planes next Tuesday. Sorry.

The only justified complaint I see here is the noise after 10PM. *That*, I would call the noise line about, were it my child. Heck, I might even call if I knew the child in question (it's a bit much to call and say "Someone I don't know except through an online forum told me...").

Airplane noise posts are making me much, much crankier than airplane noise itself. And please note that in my judgement nine days of winds justifies no post. Nine days of airplane noise...perhaps, if your daughter was woken up often during those nine days, I would have an easier time seeing your point. As it stands now, all you're doing is riling up the opposition-the people who like airplanes, or like the fact that the airport is convenient and relatively efficient, or who don't mind the noise but very much mind the kvetching about it (I fall into all three categories). I doubt this was either your intent or your desire.

Just think of the Holiday Season present potential! Earplugs! Headphones! White noise generators! Redecorating (i.e. Soundproofing) the bedroom! You can also turn it into a learning experience for your daughter too. How To Write a Paper Letter of Complaint to your elected officials!

Let us know if you can feel the scowling and hear the cries from inconvenienced residents at 36,000 feet.

People that get cranky because of blog posts make me much crankier than airplane noise or airplane noise combined.

2. The airport is not surrounded by populated land - unless you include the fish in the Atlantic

Good thing people only fly east out of Logan!

THIS!!!

Okay, perhaps Winthrop does not count as "populated land". :) By that rationale Logan does have something like 120 degrees of horizon to move aircraft through. But with all the traffic Logan gets, my unfounded suspicion is that they find themselves really wanting that extra 240 degrees of horizon and its associated cubic kilometers of airspace now and again, so that they can keep all the planes safely separated from each other. There's a reason ATC is considered a high stress job.

On the other hand, there's no denying the fact that Massport is not honoring their commitment. I don't know, I guess the point that I'm groping towards is that there may be a sliding scale where less jet noise over populated areas entails slightly less of a safety margin. The existing safety margins are typically pretty damn wide, for obvious reasons, and we can probably afford to trim them some, but that "probably" bothers me. I'd love to hear what an air traffic controller or a pilot thinks of this issue -- they might just tell me I'm out to lunch and that Somervillens are being needlessly deafened.

Where do I go to file a complaint about all of the busses and trucks they choose to drive down my street (Broadway) at 6 am? Those wake me up much more reliably than the airplanes.

This probably isn't the first time someone has complained about a 9-day weather forecast, but this still strikes me as a bizarre post.

I get woken up more often by big tanker trucks/tractor trailers, people with their bass/radio blasting and emergency vehicles than by airplanes going overhead. For the most part, all of the aforementioned are tuned out because it's really not worth getting stressed out over. Get a white noise machine or earplugs for at night or if it's during the day, turn up the volume. And for the record I live on the flight path. If you find airplanes annoying, try living next to the commuter rail tracks, THAT is annoying, and yet still able to be tuned out after a while.
