Date: 2009-12-16 03:29 pm (UTC)My daughter was woken up after 10 PM last night by a low flyer. People in other areas like Southie bought their houses knowing full well about the plane noise. Its different when the FAA decides to suddenly bombard the most dense neighborhoods in the country with noise. Many of these houses have no insulation and very old glass windows that do very little for soundproofing.

Date: 2009-12-16 03:36 pm (UTC)For myself, I like hearing jet noise. It reminds me that we still have them, among other things. Er... I know this is idiosyncratic, I wouldn't ask anyone else to feel that way.

Date: 2009-12-16 03:43 pm (UTC)1. Other neighborhood have had this noise for many many years. people who moved there knew very well what they were moving into, and their homes are soundproofed.
2. The airport is not surrounded by populated land - unless you include the fish in the Atlantic
3. Runway 33L was only supposed to be used for 6% of flights but is now used for close to 20%. MassPort didn't stick to their commitment which is why Medford and Somerville are suing them.

Date: 2009-12-16 03:47 pm (UTC)Airplane noise posts are making me much, much crankier than airplane noise itself. And please note that in my judgement nine days of winds justifies no post. Nine days of airplane noise...perhaps, if your daughter was woken up often during those nine days, I would have an easier time seeing your point. As it stands now, all you're doing is riling up the opposition-the people who like airplanes, or like the fact that the airport is convenient and relatively efficient, or who don't mind the noise but very much mind the kvetching about it (I fall into all three categories). I doubt this was either your intent or your desire.

Date: 2009-12-16 04:05 pm (UTC)On the other hand, there's no denying the fact that Massport is not honoring their commitment. I don't know, I guess the point that I'm groping towards is that there may be a sliding scale where less jet noise over populated areas entails slightly less of a safety margin. The existing safety margins are typically pretty damn wide, for obvious reasons, and we can probably afford to trim them some, but that "probably" bothers me. I'd love to hear what an air traffic controller or a pilot thinks of this issue -- they might just tell me I'm out to lunch and that Somervillens are being needlessly deafened.
