Looking for a recommendation for a local FTH Buyer class.

Thanks

I seem to recall that CCAE and/or BCAE offered these types of classes, although I'm not sure if there's something currently on their schedules.

The city of Cambridge runs them regularly in Cambridge city hall. See http://www.cambridgema.gov/cdd/hsg/own/hsg_own.html#coun.

It's a good class. Some of the speakers were better than others when I took it - I remember being very impressed with the person from Wainwright and the home inspector. I think those visitors probably change all the time though.

Agreed. For a government-run course that you have to take (if you want the SoftSecond benefits, anyway), it was remarkably efficient and worthwhile.

Don't buy more home than you can afford.

Get a good inspector before you put in an offer.

Putting down a bigger down payment helps with your mortgage more than a lower interest rate.

Give the bank 3 times as long as they say they will take.

Have a lawyer on your side on closing day to explain everything you're signing.

There's a pretty good list of reputable ones here:

Most cities offer them.

We took ours through the City of Somerville; well worth while, and a good overview of the topic.

Thalia Tringo and I will be giving a free seminar on January 11 at the Somerville Theatre on buying and owning property.

Also, I will be teaching a four-part course on "How to Buy and Own A Small Multifamily Property" through the Somerville Adult Evening School starting in February.

Stay tuned for more info,

-lars
