this year my in-laws feel lazy, so we are planning to stay at my place or in the area on the 25th, maybe go out for dinner and a movie.

anyone know of any local restaurants that will be open? howzabout places that deliver in davis on that day?

happy day-when-most-businesses-are-closed to everyone :)

ETA thanks for everyone's advice! it turns out we are also having an out-of-town guest who loves clam chowder, so we're going all the way to kendall for legal seafood, which also happens to be open :)

The only restaurants that are open on XMas day are Chinese.

Check Chinese and Thai places. While you're there, say hello to me and the rest of the Jewish population of the state. :)

Out of curiosity, do Jewish folks make it a point to go out to eat on Christmas, just because? :-) I'd think it would be more peaceful to go out to eat on Christmas.

It's because they're the only places open. Also, we're bored, and they tend to be fairly empty... Similarly with movies...

...although the movies tend to be less empty the later you go. (One assumes people grow increasingly desperate for something to do that doesn't involve talking to their family...)

also, movies have become MUCH more popular recently... back 25-30 years ago, the movies were empty all day B-)

Yeah, it's not just for the Jews anymore! The past couple of years that my family has gone to the movies, the theater has been packed!! We usually go to the Common theater and walk to Chinatown for dinner. It's very festive.

Yeah, working on Christmas Day -- the movie theater opened late, at 4pm instead of noon -- was... chaotic. Much more so than any other weekday, and busier than most non-holiday weekends as well, when I did it in the Midwest about 6 years ago.

Well, the grocery stores are closed, so whaddayagonna cook? :)

My understanding (possibly flawed, since I grew up there) was that the tradition started in NYC, where everyone goes out to eat (or gets take-out) much of the time anyway, and when you don't, produce stands are on every corner so you buy most stuff the day you use it.

I'm not sure. I think it started spontaniously in a lot of places. We started watching movies because it was the only time we'd be able to watch Superman (the original, with Christopher Reeves) without waiting on a long line... Dim Sum was similar I think...

In order to be a Thing, though, a place would need a significant Jewish population as well as plenty of Chinese restaurants, and I suspect NY had that first.

Haha, maybe! I dunno, at my house, it was just something to do.

Mine doesn't

Growing up, my family usually ended up grilling steaks or chicken for dinner at home (and then watching some TV). This was North Carolina, though, so you weren't going to freeze your everything off standing over the grill. :)

East Asia, our Chinese takeout of choice was NOT open last Christmas, fair warning :)

In my experience as a Jewish American, Chinese restaurants and Indian restaurants are open on Christmas Day.

I'm going with a group to dim sum in Chinatown on Christmas morning. Chinatown will probably be abuzz with Jewish and Secular people at dinnertime! Plus, it's a cool place to take in-laws. :-)

If you want to stay in, on Christmas go to foodler.com (http://www.foodler.com) and plug in your area. It will give you every restaurant and caterer that delivers in your area, and will say whether they're delivering on Christmas. You might find some hidden options there.

Not being xmas-celebrating people, we always go out for Indian food! I'm hoping Guru's is open...

not exactly davis-local...
