I just went to the new Starbucks, and while they do have a Clover setup, they're not allowed to use it until March. The employees seem genuinely baffled as to why -- they say it's orders from HQ. But they're also clearly jazzed to have one in the store.
The store itself is a lot less cozy. Stark and businesslike. Communal conference-room tables replaced the couches. Industrial lighting instead of the blown-glass teardrop globes. Not exactly inviting or snug.
My sister used to work at a Starbucks, and she said one of the biggest frustrations was people who'd buy a small coffee & then camp out on a couch all afternoon... or take a nap... and leave others with nowhere to sit. The times I've had to use our Starbucks as an office, I've seen that sort of behavior. Seems like they got tired of it and decided to make the place as businesslike as possible - lots of laptop space - with nowhere to take a snooze or a fireside chat, and keep traffic moving. It'll lose them some "cozy coffeeshop" business, but maybe people put off by the couch-campers will stay longer.
