My sister used to work at a Starbucks, and she said one of the biggest frustrations was people who'd buy a small coffee & then camp out on a couch all afternoon... or take a nap... and leave others with nowhere to sit. The times I've had to use our Starbucks as an office, I've seen that sort of behavior. Seems like they got tired of it and decided to make the place as businesslike as possible - lots of laptop space - with nowhere to take a snooze or a fireside chat, and keep traffic moving. It'll lose them some "cozy coffeeshop" business, but maybe people put off by the couch-campers will stay longer.
