Yoga studio news: Om City Yoga at 2404 Mass Ave (at Harvey St/ Cameron Ave/ bike path) in North Cambridge closed at the end of January. The space is now taken by a (mainly) south shore yoga studio chain Open Doors Power Yoga Studios http://www.opendoors7.com/

Open Doors Power Yoga is having a grand opening at this North Cambridge location on Saturday February 20, offering free hot power yoga classes all day Saturday. The schedule is 8-9:30 AM Power Yoga, 10-11:30 AM Power Yoga-Beginners, 12:00-1:15 PM Power Yoga, 5:00-6:30 PM Power Yoga-Moderate.

I've never tried hot power yoga before, so maybe I'll give it a shot.

I hope the new yoga studio will not spam this LJ community the way Om City used to.

I was just going to say--we should have realized they closed because they had stopped posting "announcements" constantly.

While I'm complaining about frequent flyers, Ron, can you get that Notlob Music guy to put LJ-cuts in his giant posts?

Unfortunately, he seems to be somewhat ineducable. I haven't noticed it being as bad as before, though.

There was a lull, but I noticed being annoyed again by a recent one.

You guys do an awesome job with moderating, so I should stop asking for so many ponies.

Our lives as moderators would be so much easier (and our readers would be less annoyed) if LJ let us reformat other peoples' posts and add lj-cuts to them.

That would be great! Silly LJ.

Another WHAT? Another closed yoga studio?

Can you get off this 'OH MY GOD THE SKY IS FALLING WE'RE ALL GONNA STARVE' nonsense every time a business closes?

But without running around like Chicken Little, how will [livejournal.com profile] nvidia99999 stay warm through the winter? There's no baseboard heating for the undersides of bridges!

No, another Yoga Studio, obviously, since that what this thread is about!

Can you get off this 'I CAN READ PEOPLE'S MIND WHEN I'M STONED' nonsense? You cannot.

gah i was actually thinking of trying that place out since it's so close to me and noticed the site said it was closed for renovations, but i didn't realize it was closing for good. i'm glad another yoga place is moving in, but i hope all the classes aren't hot! baptiste is right down the street, and davis sq does mainly hot classes too, bah!
guess i need to move within walking distance of O2 again, too bad i'm not wild about soni...

I don't know anything about yoga, so what does it mean for a class to be 'hot' ?

The room is heated to about 100F, but it's a dry heat so it doesn't hurt that much. I've heard some chains go as hot as 120F.

i forget the actual temperature definition, but basically they crank the heat up so that you're dripping everywhere and feel like you're going to pass out from heat exhaustion by the end... or at least that's how i feel trying to endure it. it's a great way to help lose weight if that's what you're going for (and helps you loosen up in general for stretching). in the winter time, that's not so bad- your limbs are literally steaming when you walk outside. but in the summer, going home to a third floor place with no AC, not so great.

i want to say the temperature of the room is usually 95-105 whereas at a regular studio it's just whatever, usually with fans on to combat all the body heat. i don't mind Warm rooms, but the intense heat stuff isn't my cup of tea.
....plus, it's kinda stinky with odors and just too stifling :P

I don't know, that sounds pretty awesome to me, and was gonna try it this summer. Although, I did spend many a summer on a Central TN farm...

They crank the thermostat up. Supposedly making the room hot loosens up your muscles and makes you more flexible. The temp can be anywhere from 80-105 degrees, depending.

It's not hot like a steamroom, it's hot like an August day.

That said, you might not enjoy it. But it's not super-hot.

As an aside, O2 is worth the trek! I still come in from Dorchester to take classes there, even though it's been a while since I lived in Cambridge.

That's a really creative way to get around the fact that the studio space doesn't have air-conditioning! (Which was one of the two reasons I stopped going to Om - I couldn't do classes during the summer, because I'd end up dry-heaving in the bathroom I was so overheated)
