PJ Ryans Pub Quiz & New Menu

Hi All,

My friend and long time trivia teammate is taking over PJ Ryans Pub Quiz, just up the road in Teele Square. The best thing about PJ Ryans trivia is that is NOT Stump trivia. The quiz master makes his own game, and it's a lot more fun. So get a team together (6 or less) and check it out.

Also, if you haven't been to PJ's in a while, they have a brand new expanded menu with a lot more options and a little more upscale than nachos/burgers etc. Last night I had the mussels&fries and it was crazy delicious, a metric ton of food for the price. It think they have a menu up on FB.

Pub Quiz Night at Atwood's Tavern starts at 7pm on Wednesday nights. It isn't Stump; the quizmaster writes her own (really excellent) questions. Bonus: The quizmaster is The Sugar Dish Fairy from The Slutcracker.

I think some places want to get their dinner crowd out before the trivia crowd shows up. Most places start at 8 or 9, pjs is a bit later but they have been like that for as long as I can remember, pre stump anyway. You can still get out before midnight, and since I live so close I can still catch Lost, woot.

The other trivia nights I've been to were earlier and we'd eat while we quizzed. Chalk me up as another for whom a 10pm start is way too late.

(And if I did manage to get to one, the food wouldn't be all that relevant because I'm not going to have a big dinner that late. Would their kitchen even still be open?)

I hear you, it is late, but if the time doesn't work there are other good quizzes nearby, but most are stump. I'm a big trivia fan and have played all over the place but this one is my fave, not just because it's nearby. To answer your question, the kitchen closes at 10, I was just posting the new menu as an fyi since I go there a lot.

I'm sure their time works for them, i've been playing there for something like 10 years and it usually draws a good crowd. I'm just supporting my friend and giving a shout out to a good time in the davis area.

Johnny D's Monday night trivia starts at 8 pm. But their kitchen is closed, so you need to either eat beforehand, or bring in food from elsewhere (they're fine with that).

They are moving to a new webite I think, but I did see it up on pj ryans facebook page so far I have had the steak, and mussels and fries. I have heard good things about the roast chicken, braised beef, and gypsy eggs. They have a bunch of other entrees but my brain is fried.

I'm just curious why there is so much bashing of Stump trivia? I'll be the first to admit that some of the Stump trivia hosts it can be lame/cheesy/Top40DJvoice and that's enough to ruin the game. Clearly you prefer your friend's game over Stump, but I'm just wondering what your (and others) particular gripes are about Stump...

Well, I will play stump trivia - for instance I'll go to the Newtowne in Porter sometimes. Beer and a pitcher, 9bucks! Woot. Anyway, stump trivia is often much easier, sometimes too easy.

I have been to some places where the trivia person is just reading questions and can't even pronounce some of the words. Ye Old Ale House in Dedham, I'm looking at you! Joe Sent Me does a good job with stump.

I guess I'm just a trivia snob, but I've found the categories and questions much more fun when the trivia person is personally invested in the quiz, and went out of their way to do fun things like themes etc. It's more entertaining and more of a challenge.

My two fave quizes have been PJ Ryans (first Will, then Nate now Bob) and Dena who used to do sunday trivia at Tir Na Nog (i still mourn that place).

agreed about the easiness. I've been playing at a place up in Lowell that does Stump on Mondays for about a month and a half, and my team has won every time except for one, where we finished second by a point.

In this particular case, I'm not going to say I mind because they do it on $.25 wing night, and when we win, the four of us each get our wings and about half of one beer for free. I like getting a 23-oz beer and 16 wings for about $4 out-of-pocket including tip.

But I certainly wouldn't mind being actually challenged once in a while.
