In September's Democratic primary, voters in Medford and Somerville selected Carl Sciortino as their new state rep. for the 34th Middlesex district, ousting longtime incumbent Vincent Ciampa. In response, Ciampa has launched a nasty write-in campaign, calling Sciortino a "one-issue candidate" because of his stand against the gay marriage amendment and recruiting an antigay Waltham organization (Article 8) to blast Sciortino as a member of the "homosexual lobby." Some of you may have seen a barrage of bulk mail from Ciampa and Article 8 (the Waltham group) in your mailbox -- as well as more campaign literature from Sciortino, who is pressed to defend himself against the Ciampa camp's charges.

Learn more about Ciampa's ill-motivated write-in bid here.

So, while some of you may feel like staying home on Tuesday because 'your vote doesn't matter,' it most certainly does for many local races, especially the 34th Middlesex race, where a campaign of hate and divisiveness is seeking to upend Sciortino's victory, which was won on a platform of concern for schools, health care, urban issues and a breadth of other issues that touch all of us.

So GET OUT AND VOTE (find out where to vote), and if you're in the 34th Middlesex district, don't let hate write its way back into the State House -- support Sciortino!

(BTW, I'm not affiliated w/the Sciortino campaign, I'm just a Somerville resident who's pissed off at Ciampa's dirty tactics... I actually called the number listed on his campaign materials to lodge a complaint with his campaign, and ended up having words with his wife!)

Please Read, Take Action and Forward

Dear Friends,

Carl Sciortino defeated anti-gay incumbent Vinny Ciampa fair and square in the September primary to represent Somerville and Medford in the State Legislature.  But Ciampa and anti-gay extremist groups will stop at nothing to prevent Sciortino, an openly-gay man, from taking office.  They are mounting a bigoted “write-in” campaign to reelect Ciampa, the likes of which we have never seen before.

The main opposition group – Article 8 Alliance – just mailed a document to thousands of voters in the district called "A Special Report on the Homosexual Lobby's Secret Campaign to Install a Homosexual, Anti-Catholic Extremist in the State Legislature"  [See http://www.article8.org/ and http://www.parentsrightscoalition.org/ to see more of what he (and we) are up against.]

Carl needs many volunteers to work the polls.  (Campaign headquarters are a short walk from the Davis Square T).  Please call the Sciortino campaign headquarters – (617) 625-2831 – and offer to volunteer on Election Day.  They will work with you to find a location and time slot that works for you.  It is critically important that we help Carl stave off these terrible homophobic attacks.

Tuesday, November 2: Election Day
Work the Polls for Carl Sciortino
All day, or any three hours
between 6:30 AM and 8:00 PM
Call 617.625.2831 to volunteer

I realize this might be a little late for tonight, but it is still worth saying:

If you are driving on a residential street on Halloween, please be *very* mindful of your speed. There are a lot of little kids out wanting candy. Add in the fact that it is dark and some of them are wearing masks that obscures their vision...

I live on a very residential street just north of Teele Square and have seen several cars blow down the street at speeds that were in excess of 40-45mph. To me, at least, that is completely unacceptable.

Just be careful out there.
