Hey everybody, I need your help. If you aren't busy Monday (or even if you are, and can rearrange your schedule a bit) there is a Bone Narrow Drive for a 9 year old boy with leukemia I know from volunterring at
Ronald McDonald House that is desparately in need of his second bone marrow transplant. He recieved his first transplant last year from his sister but relapsed after and his only chance of survival at this point would be a second transplant but they haven't found another compatible donor.
Even if you aren't compatible for Elijah, your name will be kept in the registry incase you are compatible with another person in need of a bone marrow transplant in the future.
Here's more info on the drive:
Bone Marrow Drive
On
Monday, February 28, 2005, between the hours of
2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., a
Bone Marrow Drive will be held in
Gasson Hall, on the main campus of
Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. This drive is held in honor of 9 year old Elijah Norbert for the
National Marrow Donor Registry.
Anyone between the ages of 18 and 60, and in good general health, is eligible to be a donor. The test consists of a simple blood draw from the arm and will place the potential donor on the national list for bone marrow donors for any person in the United States who is currently or may in the future be in need of a bone marrow transplant. Prior to the donation of blood, any possible donor will be required to watch a 10 minute video which explains what is required of a bone marrow donor (if you are interested in knowing this prior to February 28th, you can access the specific information by going onto the web site of the
National Marrow Donor Program (MNDP).
Insurance providers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are required by Law to cover the cost ($25.00) of the screening. Receipts will be provided for all such donors at the Drive for reimbursements by Insurance companies in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As it stands today, February 10, the MNDP will cover the full cost of the first 30 donors.
In addition, any persons of color and/or of mixed race are also currently being tested for free since the MNDP is in dire need of such possible matches. for more info see:
