Just a reminder for all of you drivers out there that the two lights on Alewife Brook Parkway between Mass Ave and Broadway are, in fact, traffic lights that do, in fact, turn red on occasion. They do not simply flash green and yellow all the time.

They turn red when a pedestrian wants to cross the road. Please stop when the light is red so you do not mow down some innocent pedestrian who is trying to cross in a crosswalk with a red light.

I say this because I am a runner and my long run takes me down Alewife Brook Parkway. I do not want to have to cross the road, but the sidewalk only goes half the distance on the south-east side of the road. I get to a crossing, I press the button, the light turns red, and then EVERY TIME a car comes flying through at a very high rate of speed. One driver even flicked me off and honked his horn at me.

I normally have other problems with drivers and crosswalks while on my runs, but this is the one place where I consistently feel like if I make one wrong move I might get seriously hurt.

:o)

Can anybody out there recommend a good realtor for the somerville/medford area (also malden, belmont, watertown, cambridge, arlington, etc)?

I'm looking for a 1 bedroom apartment starting preferably around July, but as early as June or as late as August.

(I'm not looking for a roommate situation)

Thanks in advance!

on wednesday night, i stopped by the burren back room to see a band called "ilyaimy", as recommended to me by my band's sound guy:

http://www.ilyaimy.com/ilyAIMYindex.html

...and they are GOOD. it is just the two people, rob on guitar and vocals, heather on vocals (often close harmony), djembe, and more guitar. they had a pickup djembe player sometimes, a guy who runs an open mic on tuesday nights. the sound reminds me a bit of ani difranco from the era when she was touring with just andy stochansky -- catchy, elaborate, percussive guitar, a bit of drumming, interesting lyrics. the vocal harmonies were really nice. they mostly did originals, which i respect, and they tossed in a cover of jethro tull's "locomotive breath" that made me very happy :) we bought all their albums and went home.

they'll be back at the burren on sunday may 1 at 8pm. i'll be going back to see them again too. highly recommended :)

Quick backstory for those of you not familiar with the issue: As part of the big dig, the state planned a series of public transportation and related projects to balance out the spending on car traffic. One of these was a promise to Somerville and Medford to extend the Green Line. The Romney administration has been dragging its feet, not funding the project, and trying to convince us to settle for a bus line. In the new budget, funding for pre-construction work on the Green Line extension was entirely missing.

Remember Carl Sciortino, the young progressive who defeated 16-year incumbent Vinnie Ciampa in last September's primary? He's now the state rep for the 34th Middlesex district, which starts a couple of blocks from Davis Square and goes into medford. This week, he made his first speech to the MA House, and succeeded in passing one of only two funding amendments that were passed to this year's budget. Thanks to Carl, the Green Line extension project will probably be funded this year.

The Somerville News reports:
Speaking to a hushed chamber of his peers, State Rep. Carl M. Sciortino Jr., made his maiden speech as a member of the Great and General Court of the Commonwealth tonight in support of his amendment to the state budget bill appropriating funds for the pre-construction engineering work on the extension of the Green Line through the city and onto Medford.

"No other issue unifies my district more than this," said the freshman legislator.

Sciortino said the people of Somerville and Medford would not give up the fight to extend the Green Line, despite attempts by members of the Romney adminstration to derail it.

In an email to his supporters today, Carl wrote... )
