I just completed my move from Boston to Somerville (yay!)  But my cute sofabed will not fit up the stairs to my new place.  Does anyone have any recommendations on either hiring a crane to lift it in, or furniture disassembly services?

Update: I've set up an app't with Melo Bros.  They seem very nice, and they gave me a really reasonable price.  Thank you for all of the suggestions!

Free Stuff "open house": Tonight 5-9:30 pm!

Lots and lots of free stuff for you! Please come over tonight (Monday) and take whatever you want out of my large collection of really good stuff that I just can't keep. Going fast (we're moving over the next couple of days) I've got:

Large cat carrier
One drum from a drum kit (a tom, maybe?) - fun to bang on or use as a funky end table!
Medium tv table - black laminate - in great shape
Tons of Car Busters magazines (I bought a hundred back issues to hand out, and then didn't)
Many other magazines, several year's worth of:
- Vegetarian magazines
- Utne
- Ode
- Mother Earth News
- Backwoods Home
Large tv, works pretty well, but has a loose cable jack (easily fixed if you know what you're doing), no remote
Box of empty DVD cases - used but in good condition
Some picture and poster frames
Pretty bicycle art prints in frames
Electric crepe maker
Some intersting decorative things
A couple of wet (from the rain, yesterday) chairs - a swivel/desk chair and a funky comfy green rocking chair
A whole lot of books
and more random stuff

Address: 65 Hudson Street, Somerville.
We're pretty much right behind the Somerville Armory. Hudson is one way off of Lowell Street a block down from Highland Ave. We're on the first floor - Apt 1.

Can anyone recommend a dog trainer within the Boston area that they have personally used and wouldnt mind telling me their experience with the person.

We have two dogs (jack russell and a jack russell/pug mix) and their barking is out of control. One of them barks only when someone pulls into the driveway and we arent home (even if its us coming home) however he does not do it when we are home. The other dog is worse..she barks at anyone walking in front of our house, she hates the mailman, she hates anyone coming up our porch steps...basically her barking is more territorial.

We have tried citronella collars, we try training them ourselves (we have done training classes @ Petsmart and do well with those) but the barking is the one thing we cant seem to train with, we researched electronic collars but most articles I read said that they sometimes wont work with territorial barking because the need to defend is stronger than the shocks.

I have read a few books, researched online, but we need a person who is skilled with this :/ I basically need the dog whisperer skills!

(also posting in b0st0n)

Edit: Also we have new neighbors i think around the corner but behind us...and they have a dog that barks constantyl and people think its my dogs...granted my dogs do bark but not for hours at a time, so im also getting blamed for the other dog now too and i have no idea what to do with that any suggestions?

This Wednesday, August 30, is the last day to register to vote for the September 19th state primary election. Somerville City Hall will be open for voter registration until 8 pm this Wednesday. Here's the official city press release.

None of Somerville's state reps or state senators have opposition this year, but we will have highly contested 3-way primaries for both Governor and Lieutenant Governor. So if you haven't registered yet, please do so.

Poor Little Rich Girl is officially moving into the West Coast Video space.

I understand the landlord turned away a Verizon store and a couple of other big chains first, because he didn't want the Square going in that direction. So, hooray local businesses!

Hi everyone,

I just moved to Davis a couple months ago, but have been itching to get involved. I went to the recent bike trail extension planning meeting, which was great, but I keep hearing rumors about a Davis Square Task Force. Despite my best attempts at googling them, I've found nothing!

Can anyone clue me in on how to get involved in this?

Thanks!

The little nip in the air this past week reminds me that the fireplace is long overdue for a cleaning. Anyone have chimney sweeper recommendations?

The Massachusetts Primary will be on Tuesday, September 19th. To be allowed to vote, you have to register at least 20 days before the election: that means that if you're not already registered to vote, you must register by this Wednesday, August 30th. I know [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman already mentioned this, but I have a bit more to add. There are some exciting races in this year's Democratic primary for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Secretary of State.

In November, the only serious contest you'll get to vote for for an important office will be for Governor - around Somerville and surrounding cities, Democrats will win all the legislative seats, and Democrats will win all of the other statewide offices without a doubt. The primary is more important than the general election!

Just this weekend, I was having brunch with [livejournal.com profile] ravenword and [livejournal.com profile] catbird and asked if they were registered to vote... one of them was, but not her boyfriend, so I gave her a voter registration form; the other took one for herself and her boyfriend :) This is the time to ask your friends and family if they're registered, and to register yourself if you've moved or aren't sure.

I work for one of the candidates, John Bonifaz who is running for secretary of state... as his campaign blogger. Today, I wrote a long post for his blog with everything you wanted to know about registering to vote in Massachusetts - where to get forms, how to fill them out, what common mistakes people make when filling out forms, and the finer points of who is eligible (yes, college students from other states who are living here are eligible to vote here).

Remember: neighborhoods with higher voter turnout, get more attention from government and from candidates! There are only two days left, so register someone (and yourself too :)
