The Massachusetts Primary will be on Tuesday,
September 19th. To be allowed to vote, you have to register at least 20 days before the election: that means that if you're not already registered to vote,
you must register by this Wednesday, August 30th. I know
ron_newman already mentioned this, but I have a bit more to add. There are some exciting races in this year's Democratic primary for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Secretary of State.
In November, the only serious contest you'll get to vote for for an important office will be for Governor - around Somerville and surrounding cities, Democrats will win all the legislative seats, and Democrats will win all of the other statewide offices without a doubt. The
primary is more important than the general election!
Just this weekend, I was having brunch with
ravenword and
catbird and asked if they were registered to vote... one of them was, but not her boyfriend, so I gave her a voter registration form; the other took one for herself and her boyfriend :) This is the time to ask your friends and family if they're registered, and to register yourself if you've moved or aren't sure.
I work for one of the candidates,
John Bonifaz who is running for secretary of state... as his campaign blogger. Today, I wrote a long post for his blog with
everything you wanted to know about registering to vote in Massachusetts - where to get forms, how to fill them out, what common mistakes people make when filling out forms, and the finer points of who is eligible (yes, college students from other states who are living here
are eligible to vote here).
Remember: neighborhoods with higher voter turnout, get more attention from government and from candidates! There are only
two days left, so register someone (and yourself too :)
