So I'm going on a 4th date Sunday afternoon with someone I'm really into, and want to do something outside and fun in the beautiful weather, and within walking distance of Davis, preferably in the Teele Square-ish direction. Any brilliant hidden spots to picnic? Or other great ideas? I'm new to this.
May. 29th, 2008
This Saturday, I'm co-leading a bicycle tour of historical sights around Somerville, on behalf of the Somerville Bicycle Committee and the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission. The ride will focus on the many commuter rail stations that Somerville once had, and on the Green Line stations that will soon take their place.
The ride starts at Somerville City Hall, 93 Highland Avenue, at 10 am. We'll take about three hours to ride about seven miles, stopping along the way at railroad-related sites and at such historic landmarks as the Prospect Hill Tower and the Old Powder House. The ride will end at the Somerville Museum, where we'll enjoy refreshments and an exhibit of the Somerville Preservation Awards.
Rain date is Sunday, June 1, same time and starting location. For more information, e-mail rnewman@thecia.net or call 617-628-8895.
We will ask for a voluntary $3 donation to support the activities of the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission.
A map of the route
A turn-by-turn description (cue sheet) of the route, including elevations. (We won't be doing any major hill climbs.)

Somerville Community Baptist watering
May. 29th, 2008 08:47 amok, here's one for your morning snark, but maybe someone can help.
Does anyone reading this go to or work at the Somerville Community Baptist Church on College ave? They seem to water the lawn, and the sidewalk, all the time, even in the pouring rain. Not only is it a kind of appalling waste of water, but I get tired of dodging the spray every time I walk by. Overwatering is also bad for the plants there and I'm surprised they don't have more mold and moss.
Anyway, if any of you have any connection there, can you please ask them to cut it out? They'd save a bunch of money, too.

This isn't directly related to Somerville, but it is deeply related to this LJ community as part of LJ, and is a pretty darn major event. I beg the mods' indulgence in posting this.
The first ever election for user representative to the Livejournal Advisory Board ends TONIGHT at 9 pm Pacific / midnight EST.
Please vote.
I urge folks not to start a potentially contentious discussion of the candidates here. There are other communities for that (which due to comments I have decided no longer to link here), and many of us have posted our own thoughts in our personal LJs already. I just have spoken to a lot of local LJers recently who weren't really aware of the election, its importance, or that it ends today. If you love your Livejournal, and/or if you want this community to stay healthy and strong on LJ well into the future, this election is worth paying attention to and voting in.
ETA: The SOLE reason I posted this is because this community,
davis_square, has gained a real and important role in the civic life of the physical-world community, Davis Square, and of Somerville at large. This LJ community, being hosted on LJ, is subject to LJ's rules and caprices. LJ is offering those of us who rely on its service a chance to vote for a representative. Who this rep is - or even *whether more than a tiny handful of people bother to vote* may have direct effects on the future of LJ, which affects
davis_square. That's why I thought it was worth posting.
