Perhaps you locals involved in theater can help me out...
I'm looking to borrow, for a day or two next week, an vintage television (or a couple of vintage televisions) for a photo shoot. Are there any local sources? They do not need to work. I can arrange to pick up and drop off if needed.

Tuesday, July 1 - 9 Mallet Street (off Willow Ave near Ball Square)
Wednesday, July 2 - 26 Eastman Road (off Highland Ave just east of Cedar St)

Monday, July 21 - 141 Hudson St
Thursday, July 31 - Ciampa Manor, 27 College Ave

Maybe I'm thinking of some other time last year but I feel like there was a July 4th parade down Highland. Does anyone know if there's one this year? I haven't been able to find anything about it but I live close to highland and it would be great to know what streets are closed.

scholar and i caught the 5.45 Happening and as we exited the theater i BARELY managed to stop the guy in the middle of stealing my bike.  He'd already snipped both locks and was wheeling it away.  I suspect the red road bike he road off on was not his, so if you had one stolen tonight i HIGHLY recommend you call the cops and report it.  I gave a full description of him to the dispatcher, while the uniform asked many fewer questions, but regardless.  The information is in the system.

Side notes:  311 on a cell phone went right to Somerville 311, which pleasantly surprised me a little due to the whole cell phone/911 routing issues.  The dispatcher took LOTS of info, but not, oddly enough, my name.   But other than that she was quite thorough.  Yay.  The uniform asked far fewer questions, but was polite and professional, so again good, and showed up within minutes - 3 minutes, at most?  It was fast, and that impressed me as well.

Anyway, go ahead and jump on me for using 2 cables and not a U for running errands, but this is the first time i've had a problem with daytime theft.  My days of innocence are now behind me.

If we're all vigilent maybe this guy will get caught.  Bike theft is hardly up there with personal assault, but when you love your bike and use it like most of us do, the loss hurts deeply.  As does the near loss.

And if someone wants to link to Sheldon's page again (we miss you Sheldon!) yes, we know.  U locks rule the day.

Surprised I hadn't heard about this sooner, but Pemberton Market has moved from its ancient storefront on Rindge and Mass Ave. to the former Bread & Butter Konvenience / former White Hen location on Mass Ave and Day Street (right next door to Pemberton Farms, amazingly enough, so it's clear someone at Pemberton had the foresight to grab that opening as soon as they saw it.)

So say goodbye to the Krazy K name, say goodbye to the gas station convenience store layout and those quaint and charming toy rose-in-tube crack pipes at the counter (helluva impulse buy, Joe) and say hello to a ... a return to the White Hen look, with the cash registers smack in the center of the store and everything. It was kinda weird walking by today and seeing the store as it Used To Be, back when you could go in at 3 in the morning, grab your ice cold beverage and be treated to a little show when the little guy at the counter confronted three very large Youts who had been trying to steal scratch tickets when he wasn't looking.

Those were the days. Anyway.

"Hey wow," I said to the new guy behind the counter, "You brought the cash registers back to the way they were when the White Hen was here. That's pretty cool."

"We're not White Hen," he replied wearily. "This is now Pemberton Market."

I decided to drop the subject.

The store's half stocked at this point, and some of the freezers aren't working, but they're getting things set up more or less. There was a laptop at a little coffee bar counter, so maybe they're putting in WiFi. I couldn't get much more information out of the counter guy, as he was too busy explaining to a customer that no, they didn't have any larger containers of ice cream for sale because not all the freezers were working.

I did, however, catch the statement that they're not going to be open 24 hours. In fact, my question about hours was met with a tone of surprised disgust, making it sound as if I'd just asked if they were going to be selling roast puppy with kitten sauce. So it looks like another all-nighter in the area bites the dust, which is quite disappointing for the night people.

On the other hand, hey. Center counter comeback.
